Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Tristan.
Hi Julie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I love working hard, I usually have two jobs (as I do now). I love having a foot in the Radio & TV door because each career is so much fun! I feel very lucky to be doing what I’m doing. I got started at Mizzou with a Journalism degree after I realized I didn’t want to study to be a surgeon at SLU after I took biology and had to dissect a frog! p.s. I did not dissect that frog! Since then, I’ve worked as a DJ at several radio stations in town. I hosted Show Me St. Louis on KSDK-TV Newschannel 5. I’ve hosted a few morning shows including the one I’m on now on Y98, The Wake Up with Bret & Julie 6am-10am. I’ve won two Emmy’s and I still have those two jobs. I work at Y98 and I freelance as a Multi-Media Journalist for HEC Media doing stories & being the voice and a producer for a show called “Spotlight STL” that airs Sundays at 9:30am on KPLR-11…I also do freelance videography, writing and editing for my company “8 Dogs Video”… Oh look at that, I have three jobs now! Lol 🙂
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had a lot of ups and downs but I believe in positive thinking and I go to a life coach or therapist to help me through the tough times and get re-focused. I’m always working on myself and trying to improve my thoughts, my outlook or whatever is bringing me down. I believe that happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful! That’s actually a quote from Albert Schweitzer that I keep on the mirror in my bathroom. I always follow my joy! If the money is there but there’s no joy, I don’t stay. It’s not all about money, it’s very nice and I do expect to be compensated for my hard work but joy is ALWAYS number ONE for me. Always FOLLOW YOUR JOY! Life is short, do things that make you happy!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an animal advocate in town. Yes, I’m an on-air personality but just like Spiderman says, “with great power comes great responsibility” I try to use the loud voice I’m lucky to have to help others. I tell people to adopt animals from animal shelters & not buy from breeders and I also practice what I preach. I’ve personally adopted 13 dogs in my life. I LOVE adopting older pups. People know me as someone who is fun on the air but also someone who helps the community. I love St. Louis and I love helping the city I’m from. I’m a popular emcee in town and I get asked to emcee events for non-profits all the time. One year I emceed 25 events which is a lot of weekends since there’s only 52 weekends in a year. The pandemic has been challenging for non-profits but I’m impressed with how they’ve done virtual events!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love everything about St. Louis! I love the people, the parks, the zoo, the arch, the restaurants, the shops, the animals!! I love the squirrels-rabbits-opossums in my yard! I love that my family is always 20 minutes away, my friends can come over for coffee at the drop of a hat! I love that I have high school friends and college friends here! I LOVE it all!
