Today we’d like to introduce you to Katheryn Barton.
Hi Katheryn; so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I took jobs both in the community and in schools. I was working as a sign language interpreter. While working as an interpreter, my clients ranged in age, and I found myself in many different situations. In so many of these situations, I saw people, not just my clients, needing to be understood or asked questions for further understanding. As an interpreter, your ability to help in situations is limited. My role was to facilitate communication. I wanted to do more and to be able to help in more in-depth ways. This was when I decided to go back to school for counseling. While in school, I enjoyed my couples/relationship classes. They resonated with me as I’ve been interested in how people interact with one another, how relationships stay strong or fall apart, and what brings about divorce. This interest has brought me to where I am now, focusing my work and practice primarily on couples, relationships, emotions, and communication.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Figuring out what I wanted to do, working two jobs and, going to school full-time, building a family.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I own my private practice for counseling. I mainly work with couples and individuals, but most of my work focuses on couples and relationships. I love to help my clients move from feeling like roommates to having a deeper, more meaningful connection with their partners. I also know sign language and can work with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in their native language. I am most known for my easygoing yet assertive style in session, with a little bit of humor added where appropriate. I am proud of finding my dream and what I’m passionate about and skilled at and making it a large part of my life. It motivates me to keep moving forward, enjoy myself at the moment, and plan for what’s to come.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I am never giving up, asking for help when I need to, being kind and accepting of others, and appreciating and being grateful for the love and support surrounding me.
