Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Stayton.
Hi Kyra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Kyra Stayton. I am a graduating senior at Harris-State University pursuing a bachelor of arts degree emphasis on Communication Studies. I grew up in the Jennings School District (Saint Louis County, Missouri). Living in Jennings, I became accustomed to the vernacular and dialect of Jennings.
To many, the communication barrier and trust were limited especially, with the individuals that most people would find trustworthy i.e. parents, friends, and even associates. While I was there, it was difficult to find someone to listen to and vent to without any judgment. Noticing what was happening around me was very upsetting to the point I wanted to change the culture of Jennings.
This is the reason why I started a safe place. I wanted to make sure I could and would always listen to others without them feeling afraid; “Feeling Free” is what I like to call it. I created an experience of vulnerability. This includes sharing stories and uplifting others so that they can understand one another. In 2022, I finally made my dreams come true by starting my own business called “Ky’s Safe Place!” A safe place where you can get FREE Peer support from me. A safe place where you can express yourself without being limited. A safe place where you do not have to feel guilty about situations that are troublesome or even a place you can come and receive advice about anything. I, Kyra, am here to help. I am here to encourage you and help you help yourself while remembering to never give up.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The ride has not been smooth as I thought it would have been. Going to college while starting a business venture off the ground had me all over the place mentally, physically, and emotionally. Sometimes, I wanted to stop and just take a break from everything that had anything to do with work-related. Most of the time, the situations can become very challenging.
I experienced insecure thoughts (negative emotions) that came in the way. I start having thoughts on if the business was worth going for, am I on the right path, and if would anyone support me throughout. I started to tell myself lie after lie to the point I would listen to them. I literally lose myself in a cage and wasn’t motivated to go after my dreams. I just felt like it wasn’t important enough.

We are located in the greater Saint Louis area where there are not many safe places that are available or not genuine and willing to go the extra step. Ky’s safe place offers help for the homeless to rebuild themselves back from the trauma so that they can express and let go. We also help with family-building support and lastly provide peer assistance to kids and adults.

I have times when I am also very scared to be vulnerable with others.
Having thoughts that people will not be able to understand me or just me being afraid that they might not listen to me and make the conversation be about them. I realize being nervous to talk about my situations hinders my self-confidence and that need to express myself better.
