Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Jensen
Hi Lily , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I came into the esthetic world of beauty through a makeup artistry background. I have been a self taught makeup artist for almost 10 years now, although I have been a beauty enthusiast since I was a little girl. I remember being a little girl sitting on my grandmother’s bed watching intently as she sat at her vanity “putting her face on” with a head full of rollers. It was a mesmerizing process and she went from her naturally beautiful self to being dolled up with perfect precision. She and my mom instilled in me at an early age the importance of personal hygiene and self care as well as to take pride in my appearance in order to present the best version of myself to the world. I became infatuated with the art of makeup application, the understanding of painting a person’s face according to their individual bone structure and facial structure, and most importantly, how makeup can bring out someone’s confidence and strength to the surface. As I worked on my own and others’ makeup I quickly understood that all too often the skin was being disregarded before cosmetics were applied; I am under the belief that no work of art can be achieved without a proper canvas. After also working in the retail side of beauty products I fell in love with the world of ingredients and understanding the intricacy of creating a skincare routine unique to each person. While struggling with my own skin and helping others target specific concerns, I decided to evolve my love for makeup artistry into a combined love for the skin beneath. I am enthralled with the art of providing results driven treatments without sacrificing the intimate touch therapy and holistic wellbeing that encapsulates healthy skin. I am now not only a makeup artist but an esthetician who focuses on acne, compromised skin barriers, preventative anti-aging, and brow shaping.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to become the makeup artist and esthetician that I am has not been a completely smooth one. I personally struggle with mental health and it can lead to some intense ups and downs. The trajectory of my career and success has been a rocky one because of this as well as laced with a myriad of giving college my best effort, realizing it wasn’t the path for me and then the utter halt that the pandemic brought. After the world opened back up, I found myself moved back to Saint Louis from my beloved Chicago and feeling stuck in the retail world. I had to really sit myself down and ask what I wanted for myself personally and career-wise. I decided that there was nothing further I could gain from retail and if I was going to be satisfied with my life I needed to make a change. Esthetics has changed my life for the better, reawakened my love for freelance makeup of all categories and made me proud of the hard work I put in every single day. I am now very excited and hopeful for my future and how I will grow and succeed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist. As far as skin goes, I provide a wide range of services but I love to specialize in acne management, repairing compromised skin barriers, preventative anti-aging and brow shaping. As a makeup artist, I do not want to nail myself down to a specific category, rather I find a thrill in being able to do anything whether it’s wedding, glam or even special effects and costume. I am probably most known as an esthetician as my makeup artistry has become a secondary focus, not to say that it has fully taken a back seat in comparison. I am most proud of my ability to create such memorable relationships with most of my clientele; this industry is such an intimate setting and to be trusted to treat and touch people in such vulnerable states, both physically and emotionally, is the honor of my life. What sets me apart from others in my community is that I refuse to sacrifice the touch element of skin services. Often with more advanced treatments such as laser, chemical peels and microneedling, the idea of relaxation and physical touch goes out the window. Whether I am providing true massage or simply just washing a client’s face, I will always make sure that individual feels like they are being cared for and appreciated.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I tend to be quite an open book, no matter who I interact with, but if I had to choose something that may surprise people about me is my enthusiasm for knowing a little bit about a whole lot! I often joke that I am a human encyclopedia. From pop culture to political happenings to history and on, I just cannot get enough information about anything that catches my eye. History often takes precedence although I am sure I can always give a juicy update on the happenings of celebrities and scandals.
