Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Ellis.
Hi Meghan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved beauty – hair, makeup, skincare, etc. In my early 20s, I attended cosmetology school and got a paralegal studies degree. I juggled both careers for a while but eventually moved my focus to my paralegal career. After working in law offices for nearly 10 years, something was missing. I was unhappy working a typical 9-5 and being trapped in a cubicle. That encouraged me to get creative and think of other ways to use my cosmetology license that didn’t involve doing hair. That is when I started to explore the idea of opening a space where I can provide beauty-related services that can help educate women and simplify their beauty routines.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I opened the studio and started seeing clients in February 2020, before the Covid shutdown. I was only open for a couple of weeks before I had to close doors until mid-summer. That was a setback, but everything ended up working out just fine.
As you know, we’re big fans of Makeupology. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My intention with opening Makeupology was to bring beauty services to my community that focuses on education and simplicity. I’ve discovered that many women need more confidence in their makeup skills, and I wanted to change that. I specialize in using Seint make up – a unique cream-based makeup brand. I wanted to provide a trendy + cozy space where women can relax and play with makeup and leave feeling confident and excited about the new makeup routine we created for them.
In addition to makeup services, I also offer eyebrow and lash services. Brow lamination is by far my most popular service and what I am known for. Brow Lamination is a newer service to hit the beauty scene, and I was the first to offer it in my area. I love providing clients with a brow makeover that exceeds their expectations. Brow Lamination is a pain-free service that makes the eyebrows appear fuller and thicker – everyone is always so impressed with the results, and I love that! My clients love pairing this service with a Lash Lift + Tint. Everyone is always commenting on how adorable the space is. My attention to detail sets me apart, whether meticulously shaping the brows or adding little touches to the studio, like my decor and yummy candles. I am most proud of my personal connections with my clients. Many of them are like family to me, and I love catching up with them whenever they visit the studio. Other services on my menu include special event makeup applications, makeup lessons, group makeup parties, brow shaping, brow tinting, spray tans, and hair styling. There’s a service for everyone, no matter what their needs are.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Entrepreneurship can seem intimidating when you’re fresh in the game (or just before you take the leap). You won’t have all the answers on day one – it’s a journey, and you will figure things out along the way. My biggest lesson has been that you have to go for it, and patience is key. Always trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to take risks.
