Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Goretzke-Shannon
Hi Mikayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
During the pandemic, I started creating stickers as a way to generate income while I was unable to work. As an art student at SIUE with an emphasis in oil painting, I observed a notable shift in the art world; digital and graphic design became increasingly prominent, largely due to the transition to online platforms during the quarantine. I began designing stickers using Procreate on my iPad, and eventually expanded to creating art prints as well. My primary goal was to hone my craft while simultaneously cultivating an audience and fostering their growth alongside my work. Once restrictions began to ease, I felt the need to challenge myself further, prompting me to participate in my first art market. Since then, I have been involved in numerous art markets and have also started selling my prints and stickers at a local vintage clothing shop owned by a close friend of mine.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey as an artist has been challenging for many reasons. Striving for success in this field is tough enough, but the emergence of AI has further complicated matters by diminishing the demand for traditional/digital artists. Companies often prioritize profit over quality, which is disheartening knowing humans have the ability to create artwork in a way AI will never be able to touch. A computer will never be able to completely mimic natural talent. Additionally, with inflation impacting living costs, I’ve had to increase my hours at my serving job, which takes up about 75% of my time. On top of that, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 bile duct cancer in March 2024. This has significantly affected my ability to maintain consistency in my business, as she has always been a tremendous support. Although she still helps when she can, her energy and health are no longer what they used to be.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artistic subject matter has evolved over the years as I’ve gained experience, yet I consistently find myself drawn to darker themes. As a child, I was captivated by the horror genre, which influences my work focused on skeletal animals, figures, and decomposition. My fear of aging—a concern ingrained in many young women—has shaped my perspective. I strive to convey that ‘decomposing’ is a natural part of the life cycle and that it is beautiful to carry wisdom and experiences. Furthermore, I create feminist artwork that challenges societal expectations of women. From childhood to now, I have consciously chosen to defy the behaviors typically associated with being a woman. This sets me apart as I am unafraid to express my thoughts through my art; I want women to feel empowered and for society to recognize and respect our strength.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I firmly believe that progress in life comes only through taking risks. Capitalism often traps individuals in a stagnant role where one works tirelessly as the middleman in order to survive. As someone who enjoys challenging societal norms, I aspire to break free from this cycle. To achieve this, embracing risk is essential. I have chosen to invest in my art career, even if it means accumulating debt, as art supplies can be quite costly. I’ve taken the chance of becoming a vendor at markets knowing that that specific market may not yield immediate benefits—yet exposure is critical for an emerging artist. I’ve dedicated countless hours and sacrificed work shifts, even when finances are tight, to prioritize my art and ensure I’m prepared for these markets. Additionally, I’ve accepted commissions from clients who may not meet my pricing standards because, again, exposure holds value. Also, building a contemporary portfolio with relevant projects is vital for my growth as an artist.
