Today we’d like to introduce you to Pierre Paul
Hi Pierre, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey driven by a deep desire to create meaningful change. Growing up in extreme poverty as an immigrant from Guyana, I experienced firsthand how systemic barriers impact marginalized communities. English wasn’t my first language, and I faced numerous challenges navigating a new world. Those experiences gave me an innate empathy for others who are often overlooked or excluded.
In 2019, I had a dream to invent a sign language translator, and that idea sparked the creation of We Hear You, a company dedicated to bridging accessibility gaps. With no prior resources or roadmap, my best friend and I began knocking on doors, seeking mentorship and guidance. Over time, we developed innovative accessibility technologies, are currently exiting out first sign company to focus on our second invention The Hero Door Opener, which transforms any door into an automatic one.
Our journey hasn’t been without challenges. I’ve balanced being an entrepreneur, a disability advocate, and a Ph.D. student in Disability Studies. Along the way, I’ve learned to blend my practical experience in assistive technology with my academic pursuits to push the boundaries of accessibility and equity.
Today, I’m proud of the impact our work is having on individuals and communities. We’ve partnered with major organizations, showcased our innovations at CES, partnering with United Access and Bush Stadium. My story is one of resilience, collaboration, and a relentless commitment to creating a world where everyone has access and opportunity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has been a very bumpy road—but bumpy roads often make for the best stories. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the learning curve of becoming a genuine ally to diverse communities different from my own. Additionally, mastering the nuances of business has been an ongoing journey. Finally, without a tech background, stepping into the role of a pseudo-expert in areas like engineering and AI was a rewarding but steep uphill battle.
We’ve been impressed with We Hear You , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At We Hear You, we specialize in creating innovative accessibility solutions that enhance independence for individuals with disabilities, the immunocompromised, and anyone seeking hands-free access. Our flagship product, the Hero Door Opener, is a cost-effective, portable device that automates doors without the need for hardwiring. It’s compatible with voice activation, personal fob, and wall buttons, making spaces more inclusive and accessible for all.
