Meet Torri Taylor-spencer of A Sound Mind Behavioral Health – A Nursing Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Torri Taylor-spencer

Hi Torri, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, spending my early years in the city before moving to the county for high school. I was primarily raised by my paternal grandmother and my father, though my mother remained present and involved in my life. My nurturing nature has always been a defining trait—whether it was innate or influenced by my grandmother, a loving and compassionate woman who shaped my early years.

From a young age, I naturally gravitated toward caregiving roles, helping my grandmother, supporting my father, and taking on a “mini parent” role for my younger siblings. I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, initially dreaming of becoming either a pediatrician or a nurse.

This passion deepened after becoming a teenage mother. My journey in healthcare began when my son was hospitalized in the ICU, where one of his nurses gave me life-changing advice: to ensure nursing was truly my calling. Taking that advice to heart, I began my career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and quickly fell in love with the profession. Driven by a desire to do more for my patients, I continued advancing my education and career, becoming an LPN, then an RN, and eventually earning a master’s degree. I later pursued a post-master’s certificate to achieve my goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.

For nearly three years now, I have been practicing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). In addition, I’ve been the proud owner of a private telepsychiatry practice, which I founded a year and a half ago. Initially based in California, I’ve recently expanded the practice to Missouri, where my journey began.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been far from smooth, but every challenge has shaped me into who I am today. Balancing the demands of being a teenage mother to two children while working and pursuing my education was incredibly challenging. Those years required resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering determination.

In addition to personal challenges, I’ve also faced trials within my professional journey in healthcare. One of the most difficult periods was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I was pregnant and working as an essential healthcare worker. It was an incredibly uncertain and frightening time—something I never imagined I would experience in my lifetime.

Despite these obstacles, I remain deeply grateful for every bump in the road. Each challenge has taught me invaluable lessons, strengthened my resolve, and brought me closer to my goals. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the founder and owner of A Sound Mind Behavioral Health – A Nursing Corporation, a private telepsychiatry practice that provides compassionate, integrative mental health care. Our mission is to create accessible, personalized, and culturally competent care for individuals seeking support for their mental health and overall well-being.

We specialize in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more, with a particular focus on serving underrepresented communities. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I take a holistic approach to care—one that considers the connection between mind, body, and spirit.

What sets us apart is our emphasis on accessibility, flexibility, and inclusivity. Our telepsychiatry model allows clients to receive high-quality care from the comfort of their own homes, making mental health support more attainable for busy individuals, those in rural areas, or those with mobility challenges. I also prioritize meeting patients where they are—literally and figuratively—by offering care that respects their unique needs, preferences, and cultural backgrounds.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the trust and connection I’ve built with my patients. My practice is more than a business; it’s a space where individuals feel heard, understood, and supported on their journey toward better mental health.

For your readers, I want them to know that A Sound Mind Behavioral Health is here to provide expert care without judgment. Whether someone is seeking help for the first time or has been on a long journey with their mental health, our services are tailored to empower them to thrive.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I consider myself an open book—outgoing, personable, and always happy to connect with others. Many of my patients, especially those I’ve worked with long-term, know about my life outside of work, including my wonderful husband, our four children, and even our two beloved furbabies.

What might surprise people, however, is how much I prioritize self-care and self-love. Despite my busy schedule, I make a conscious effort to carve out time for activities that recharge me and bring joy. Whether it’s spending quality time with my family and friends, indulging in a favorite hobby, or simply enjoying a moment of peace, I believe that taking care of myself helps me show up as the best version of myself for my family, my patients, and my practice.
