Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Castellanos
Hi Alan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a full time professional miniature and scale model painter, instructor, and content creator with a passion for bringing characters to life through color and storytelling. Since starting my journey in 2018, I have developed a reputation for my unique approach to painting, as well as my ability to teach and inspire others through workshops, online courses, and tutorials. My work focuses on creating vibrant, detailed miniatures and fostering a sense of community among hobbyists. Whether through my original designs or collaborative projects, I aim to make the art of miniature painting accessible, enjoyable, and inspiring for painters of all skill levels. I first got into miniature painting in 2018 when I received the board game “Arcadia Quest.” The chibi-style miniatures were so adorable, but they were all in plain gray plastic. I thought, “Maybe I can paint these and bring them to life!” My very first miniature was a goblin from the game—it turned out absolutely awful, but I had so much fun painting it. From the start, I felt there was so much room for improvement, and I was sure that with time and practice, I could create something amazing. Now, what I enjoy most is sharing what I’ve learned with others and creating truly unique pieces.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most artists, I faced a lot of challenges in the beginning. From not having the right tools or materials to struggling with techniques, there was a steep learning curve. My first miniatures looked far from what I imagined in my head, and it was frustrating at times. But the biggest struggle was balancing my passion for painting with the financial realities of turning it into something sustainable. Finding support and opportunities as an artist, especially in Latin America, can be tough. However, every mistake and challenge taught me something valuable. Over time, I learned to embrace the process, to keep improving, and to share my passion with a growing community that inspires me every day.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Thank you for asking! I specialize in painting and customizing miniatures, with a strong focus on storytelling through color and texture. My work revolves around creating unique and vibrant pieces that bring miniatures to life, whether they’re from games, collectibles, or original designs. Over the years, I’ve developed a reputation for not only painting miniatures but also teaching others through workshops, tutorials, and online courses. I’m known for my passion for the craft, my attention to detail, and my ability to explain techniques in a way that’s approachable and inspiring.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how I’ve been able to connect with a global community of miniature painters and hobbyists. Sharing my knowledge and seeing others improve and grow in their own skills brings me a lot of joy. My two-headed dragon course, for example, has been a milestone for me—it combines my love for teaching with a design that’s completely original and created for my students.
What sets me apart is my commitment to making this art form accessible and enjoyable for everyone. I focus not just on the technical aspects of painting but on building a sense of community and encouraging creativity. Whether someone is just starting out or has been painting for years, I aim to make them feel inspired and confident in their work. For me, it’s not just about the miniatures themselves—it’s about the stories, the process, and the people behind them.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yeah, People Loves Hobbies, they help with their mental health and make them happy, so they actually contribute making the world a better place, Miniature Painting was undoubtly a great support for many people during Covid.
