Rising Stars: Meet Carlos Brown Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Brown Jr.

Hi Carlos, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Growing up I always had music around me. From being active in the children’s choir to constantly through my father’s record collection, music has always been there and never left. I even remember me and my siblings would always dance and have lip-sync sessions to some of our favorite songs. That just made me fall in love with music even more because it showed me that you can have fun and express yourself. But starting out, I always wanted to be a professional basketball player. The movie “Space Jam” really convinced me that I could play and actually do stuff that I couldn’t do. I played basketball for the YMCA’S YBL League and I found out quick that sports wasn’t my calling.

Through the many attempts to try and force the sports thing, music was STILL there. Coaching me and (little did I know) guiding me to where I was supposed to be. My father played trumpet in the Lincoln Senior High School and he’d pick it up and play from time to time. At the time he had red Ford Ranger and it was stick shift. He would play everything from Miles Davis, Najee, Grover Washington, Commissioned and sermons from the late Bishop Wille James Campbell and Bishop G.E Patterson. But to add more to it, he’d switch things up with Eric. B and Rakim, Boogie Down Productions while my mother introduced me to Earth Wind and Fire, Run DMC, and Lauryn Hill. My parents had a huge influence on my appreciation for all genres of music and encouraged me to always stay open.

I started playing the alto saxophone in the 6th grade and never turned back. I finally found the perfect sport that fed the creative appetite that was formed by listening to all of this music that I was around. Through music, I’ve learned about trust, leadership, support, honesty, fun, expression, freedom, and more. And even today, the lessons never stop. I’m always finding ways to expand! Whether if it’s Deejaying a party or producing and writing music with other creatives, it’s always a joy! There’s always something to fine-tune and work on in order to grow as human beings and I’m truly grateful to the Creator for allowing me to experience this journey so far.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not by far! I feel that if things were always smooth, everyone would want to take that route and there’d crazy traffic! One of the struggles that stands out the most were the time commitments. I remember the different sacrifices that were made in efforts to excel in my craft. I remember going to band competitions when I wanted go to school dances or to hang and not be a band kid. But the moment that we started playing or someone would crack a joke on the bus, I was reminded as to why I love doing this. It brought (and still brings) me joy.

Another struggle was that when I first started out, I was never the first to be called on to play and in many different ways I was counted out. But through these early experiences, I’ve learned to deal with disappointment in a different way and it was fuel for me to dig in and go hard every chance that I get. So, I can truly say that my struggles shaped me into the creative that I am now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a musician, DJ, producer, and composer. As far as my specialty, I’d consider it to be in laying out positive feel-good energy. Something that’s relatable from the five-year-old girl to the 89-year-old man in the room, and that’s good energy. We all want to be our best selves and to feel good about life in general. I remember when I first heard Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life” and GOOD!!! I felt good about life, being a musician, being authentically me and I vowed that I want to give that same feeling to each person that comes in contact with me artistically and in life.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I just released a Maxi Single back in November entitled “1610” on all streaming services! Be sure to check it out and share if you’re feelin’ the vibes!
