Rising Stars: Meet Dara Hamilton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dara Hamilton.

Hi Dara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have always known that entrepreneurship was my ultimate goal, and the journey started while earning a B.S. in fashion merchandising and product development at Missouri State University. After evaluating various paths to take in the fashion industry, I decided to develop a business plan that set the framework.

Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, I watched my parents and grandparents operate their businesses. This gave me an understanding of the work ethic required and the faith that it was possible. Before jumping into my own business, I decided to move to New York to gain more experience and expand my knowledge in the fashion industry. Living in NYC, funds became tight, and it was then that I started to shop more sustainably. Secondhand shops were introduced to me by my great-grandmother. Observing her and my grandmother’s sense of style, the thrift store was not foreign to me. I realized that what most people see as junk or hand-me-downs is an opportunity to express my creativity and a way to reduce waste.

My love for thrifting started in NYC as a hobby and a more cost-effective way of living. It was not until after I returned to my hometown during COVID that I realized this was my time to step out on faith and try my own business. GemU Vintage was born for those seeking sustainable, guilt-free ways to shop while embracing creativity and culture.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Smooth? There’s no such thing! In my dreams! It has been a struggle but a beautiful journey; I would not want any different. Due to GemU Vintage being my full-time, I quickly realized everything was unnecessary. If that makes sense, I am sacrificing “wants” to build what I need for my future wants and needs. Wearing the many hats to owning your own business, all while staying motivated and consistent even during downtime is the greatest challenge.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My greatest accomplishment is creating a livelihood in the fashion industry, which I am passionate about while contributing innovative style to my local community and supporting the earth. It took a lot of courage to resign from my full-time position and build a business from the ground up with many uncertainties. Some people may have considered it imprudent, but I saw an opportunity. In just the two years we have been established, GemU has been a selected vendor for over 50 markets and created partnerships with three local shops and one out-of-state (Brooklyn). Within my local community, I have created a reputation for my brand that is consistent with my values of unique fashion, quality products, and professional customer service. I have donated over $2000 worth of merchandise to underprivileged children & families in the community. However, nothing makes my heart fonder than giving back to the place I call home.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
Take risk! We only live once. I am a risk taker. I learned from my father quickly. Suppose you aren’t willing to try. How will you know? It’s almost like being a kid again. As a kid, you always testing to see what you can do again or what might not be such a good idea. Having the same curiosity as an adult is beautiful. You learn so much about yourself and your capabilities. I took a risk starting GemU and continue taking them daily, staying in business. Sometimes it can be daunting to strategize to develop a clear direction for the business. I have learned that overcoming obstacles is good for business and strengthens aspects of my personal life, making it all worthwhile. As a result, I have learned to remain nimble and able to pivot as growth opportunities arise. I take pride in knowing that GemU Vintage is on its way to continuing success as we have developed brand awareness, customer loyalty, and a profitable business model.
