Hello Grupo Filhos de Maria STL, thanks for sharing your story. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our journey started with a small group of Brazilian Catholics looking for a faith-sharing group that could be ministered to in our native language Portuguese in 2020. we found a parish (St. Joseph Manchester) that welcomed us and gave us a room to meet. In 2021 we organized our first Life In the Spirit Seminar for the Brazilian Catholic community, all Portuguese. Our group grew from a hand full to dozens of Brazilians, including a faith-sharing group for kids. Today we offer prayer groups, seminars, retreats, 1 on 1 accompaniment, and spiritual direction, all in Portuguese. We serve our parish within our Brazilian Ministry and beyond. We meet weekly, and we help Brazilians find a place to worship as well as build community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Finding resources in Portuguese with the local church is not easy. We are a small community with a large footprint of evangelization opportunities. Our parish goes above and beyond to provide these resources, and we strive through volunteer work and service of the faithful.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hundreds of immigrants come to the US and have difficulty adjusting due to cultural change. Most of them have a faith-based upbringing. St. Louis Filhos de Maris, STL, is the leading Brazilian faith-sharing group in the only Brazilian Ministry within the St. Louis Catholic community here at St. Joseph Parish.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
St. Louis is a great place to live in the US. Brazilians find an excellent quality of Life and a vibrant city to explore and grow families.
