Rising Stars: Meet Jarrett Harrison of St. Louis County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrett Harrison

Hi Jarrett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an educator and entrepreneur, my journey began with a deep-seated desire to help others. While I always knew I wanted to make a positive impact, my path to finding my purpose unfolded during my time at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. I graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor’s of Educational Studies and am on track to complete my Master’s of Education this spring. Teaching has been a fulfilling passion for seven years, consistently igniting my excitement and allowing me to be the person I needed growing up.

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly presented a new opportunity for personal and professional growth. During this time, I nurtured my passion for crafting custom wearables, transforming a beloved hobby into a small business. Additionally, I serve as a Brand Experience Designer for Rare Radar, a creative agency specializing in crafting connections and creating impact through public relations and event activations. This multifaceted approach allows me to connect with individuals on a deeper level, both in the classroom, through my unique creations, and by helping brands and individuals achieve their strategic goals.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest struggles I’ve faced was finding the balance between meeting the needs of others and preserving my own peace. This struggle permeated all areas of my life, from my teaching career to creating experiences. I often found myself prioritizing the approval and acceptance of my work by others, leading me to neglect my own needs. I yearned to help everyone, which inevitably was leading to burnout. I eventually learned to prioritize self-care and establish healthy boundaries. This meant saying “no” to certain projects, even when it was difficult. While I initially experienced regret over these missed opportunities, I realized that protecting my peace was way more important. Accepting these losses became a crucial step in prioritizing my well-being and developing my skills further.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My primary focus currently lies within my teaching career at the Pattonville School District. I am immensely proud of the work I do to help close the learning gap in mathematics for my students. Concurrently, the Rare Radar team is gearing up for our annual CelebratingHer toast to Trailblazers event, where we honor exceptional women in St. Louis. This year, we will specifically recognize the incredible educators who inspire and empower students every day. Their unwavering dedication, passion, and innovative teaching methods profoundly impact the lives of young people.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I firmly believe in the power of authentic networking and for the right reasons. Rather than simply seeking a single mentor, I encourage you to also cultivate a supportive network of like-minded individuals and friends. Remember, building these relationships is an ongoing journey. Focus on cultivating genuine connections while consistently learning and honing your craft. When seeking guidance and creating this support network, don’t get caught up in the hype or popularity of a potential person or mentor. Instead, prioritize finding someone whose values and vision genuinely align with your own. This will ensure that you receive a meaningful and authentic mentorship.
