Rising Stars: Meet Makel Hale of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makel Hale.

Hi Makel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Everything started in maybe the 5th grade, I believe. That’s when I began to teach myself how to draw different items. Fast forward to high school, I took close to every art class I could take to learn different techniques. I also started customizing shoe tie dying clothing as a little business in high school. Then after graduating high school in 2016, I learned how to cut and press vinyl, tattoo, and paint a tad more and have just been growing from that and sharpening my skills. Currently, I have two clothing brands. One is called Smokeout, and the other is DAI. I’m still tattooing, painting, and making custom clothing for others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. There are many ups and downs, times getting many sales and clients, and others may be lucky to get a couple in a month. Sometimes I won’t even really have the funds to invest in my own materials to make new products or struggle to get myself out there.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a visual artist. I paint, draw, tattoo artist, and designer. One thing I’m proud of was last year, I hosted about 8-9 art shows and got different artists and performers to the events. I think what sets me apart from others is I’m very versatile, and a lot of passion for what I do and I have been constant.
