Rising Stars: Meet Marian Brickner of St. Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marian Brickner

Hi Marian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello everyone!. Being 87 right now, I have done many things including getting a teaching degree and starting the first CO-op nursery school in 1973 in Greenville, Ill. After that I moved and got a job working for VALIC and handling the 403b benefit for people who worked at NON-profit places, like schools and hospitals. All this time I was taking pictures. Mostly my children and their dogs! Loved showing that animals had a real life!!!!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many of us, I wanted to “make a difference”, helping folks “feel better”, and keep a sense of humor while I tried! All the while I kept taking pictures, It went from using slides and negatives to digital in 2003.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Now I am a professional wildlife photographer and have been taking pictures since I was 12. I am 87 . My work includes photos for newspapers, magazines such as National Geographic Kids Magazine, a cover of Ranger Rick Jr. Magazine, and a Bonobo book with the afterward written by Jane Goodall. A photo of mine was chosen to be on the cover of Frans de Waal’s book, “”The Bonobo and the Atheist”

I spent 14 years, (2001-2015) documenting Bonobo Lucy with her family, first at the Jacksonville Florida Zoo, and then when she was moved to France, where she had her own baby, I went to finish the project of Lucy Growing up.
Since then I have chosen to spend about 6 to 8 hours every day getting THAT PARTICULAR image that gets a quick smile by the viewer. I post at least one image a day on Facebook. Because I have accumulated many images, I also produce books for children ages 2-6 all about the animals I have photographed., I have produced about 79 books since I started in 2008. My personal goal is to produce a book every 3 months, They are fun and cute,

What’s next?
I wiil continue to do what I do every day.. One of my concerns is that if I make a book every 3 months and I live another 10 years, what will I do with all those books!!!!

Pricing:

  • 25$ for each book
  • Photos that I sell range from $25.00 to1500.00
