Today we’d like to introduce you to Pam Wilson.
Hi Pam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I am a storyteller. Always have been. I love a good story. I have been writing all of my life.
About twenty years ago, I got injured and started writing about raising kids in suburbia. The column was called: S.O.S. From Suburbia and appeared as a monthly print column in Savvy Family Magazine, which morphed into St. Louis Moms and Dads, and then the column appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
It was a real Carrie Bradshaw moment. Local girl writing for the local paper! I wrote the column for about 17 years. It was always from my viewpoint as a parent and all the angst, happiness, love, and fun I had raising kids in suburbia.
Eventually, some of the columns made it into a book called, S.O.S. From Suburbia. I also had the opportunity to write for St. Louis Magazine/Parent-mostly interviews of local celebrities and Swim/Bike/Run-that was a column called: Off the Beaten Path for non-triathletes.
I have both a writing background and a social work background which led to creating WriteON! A facilitated writing group for teenagers and adults in the community. For almost three years, I was a book coach for a small branding company, coaching authors in writing their books. I also edited three anthologies for this company, as well as submitted chapters for publication.
I was also part of the ghostwriting team! Today, I have my own writing company called Wilson Mentoring and Writing. I love to help people tell their stories!!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been both a smooth road with struggles. I have learned that there is light through every darkness.
I love storytelling, yet it is challenging to find places that want to publish stories. I have written a personal narrative blog for many years – I have retired that blog, yet at the time it was a perfect outlet for my life.
I began writing again in January when I started my writing company. I am very honest and have found that readers can relate to the easy-going conversational tone and the subject matter.
Writing about what others might be struggling with unites us and opens the conversation. As does writing about the happy, successful times of our lives. Starting this business I thought I could do any sort of writing.
However, the more I talk to people and discuss with other business owners, the more I am finding my passion and what I would like to put into the world. Facilitating writing groups through WriteON! Coaching people to write Legacy Memoirs, travel writing and personal narrative blogs/stories feed my soul.
I’ve also learned to slow down… that everything has a timeline, even if I’m not aware of it!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Storytelling!
I love a good story well told. For whatever reason, I am able to look at life and tell stories-always with humor. And, I always learn, grow and evolve through every experience.
Like Nora Ephron said, “Everything is copy,” and I believe this. I am completely respectful in my own writing; it is always my perspective. My writing usually involves an “aha” moment as well as life lessons-primarily something I have learned!
Book coaching was something that I had no idea I would be able to do! Turns out, I am quite good at coaching and mentoring people as they write their stories and books!
I always ask, “What is your story?” I also love interviewing people. Many of those that I have interviewed comment how fun it was to talk with me-which I then can turn into a writing piece that shines a light on the subject!
WriteON! came to me in a dream and has been one of the best experiences of my life. Always learning from other writers allows me to grow as a facilitator and personally. This is a program that can be facilitated anywhere and for any group.
And I am just beginning to get into Legacy Memoir writing. For anyone who wants to tell their story for their families or even themselves.
In addition, I love to travel, and I like to share experiences. I am slowly merging into travel writing-more of, “try this, it’s a great adventure!”
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Everyone has a story and I believe as we move forward, we will continue to see and read extraordinary stories from anyone who wants to share.
Trends seem to indicate that stories can take any number of formats: writing, video, podcasting. It will be exciting to see how storytelling continues to evolve!
