Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronni Jay.
Hi Ronni, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
People have told me I should do comedy for years, but I brush it off. Whenever I was seen as funny, I wasn’t trying to be. I was supposed to step out and start in 2020, but the pandemic hit, and many things were shut down. I could’ve created another way in 2020, but my children (one of which is autistic) were being homeschooled. I finally stepped out and started in July this year, and I’m gradually making a name for myself.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is never a smooth road, and thinking it would be delusional. Many people don’t know I dealt with homelessness after a failed marriage seven years ago. This was also a time when I struggled with my mental health and had to do partial hospitalization. In addition to those things, I picked up a heavy drinking habit, trying to numb the pain of life. People don’t know me making them laugh at me also.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve finally got my passion, and comedy is it. Have had the pleasure of being the comedian for Women of Words back in October. Currently, I perform as a stand-up comedian, paying my dues by popping up at an open mic. At some point, I would love to record skits, get off into improvement, and so many things. I’m proud of my growth in these five months and the encouragement and love I receive from veteran comedians. I’m also proud that I realized at 39 that it wasn’t too late to start. Something that sets me apart is my drive to keep going. I don’t care how many people are in the audience, whether it’s a whole audience or two people I’m going to perform.
How would we have described you growing up if we knew you were growing up?
Honestly, not much has changed. Growing up, I was quiet unless I was around close family and friends. And, of course, I was grown up, so anyone I’ve grown up with isn’t surprised about my path.
