Today we’d like to introduce you to Taya .
Hi Taya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing all of my life! My mom always has me in local talent shows, and I loved singing in my school’s choirs m, church, etc. I was in a few girl groups as well. I was always shy and had terrible stage fright, but it never stopped me from writing music and dancing. However, life happened. I got married & had my 2 sons, and decided to get my license as a cosmetologist, which wasn’t bad of a transition since that was always something I did as a hobby growing up. However, I just put music to the side to focus on those roles. ( I thought as I got older that I missed my window to sing, so I didn’t make any plans on starting bk.) Fast forward to 2020, where I transitioned into a completely different life I imagined having for my sons and me, and honestly, it was a tough transition. 2020 was the worst year of my life, as I know it was for the majority of the world as well. I lost a lot of people and was just not myself, resulting in me going to the one thing I could always count on to be there for me and make me pour out every single emotion I was feeling, and that was music.
I have always been considered the “strong one,” so while going through that turmoil, I had no one but God, music, and my sons. Music has always been so therapeutic to be Tay with all my flaws and dig deep into expressing my life experiences and emotions. I know God gave me this gift knowing this would be the tool I needed to get through some pretty hard times. It took me a while to realize it, but what’s for you will always be for you! I released my first single, “Bad Habit,” which is still one of my supporter’s favorites and my most streamed song! I’m so so grateful! In April of 2022, I released my first EP, “EXPOSED.” I’ve been creating and loving my musical journey so far. This is the happiest I’ve ever been, and I’m going as far as God will allow me to ❤️
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth having is easy. I’ve had some hardships within myself and simply trying to find a great team that complements my vision. It’s taking time, but I know it’s coming ❤️
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Aside from being an R&B singer, I also own Tay Renee Beauty & Braids. I have been a hairstylist/braider since I was 14 but professionally for 7 years. This is another one of my passions that keeps me grounded. Making other women feel beautiful and seen is a part of my purpose, and I get to do it cosmetically and musically. That’s what sets me apart. I’m so proud of being able to balance the two. It has its hardships with simply trying to put the same amount of drive, time, and ambition behind both, but it always works out in the end. I get the best of both worlds, and my clients always inspire me with my music!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory! Omg, that’s a no-brainer! Hands down, with out a doubt, it will have to be when my 3 cousins (my mom called us the 4 musketeers 🤣) and I used to always makeup choreography to our favorite songs and perform them in front of the family! Especially at parties and holiday gatherings! Soo much fun and I will never forget those moments!
