We’re looking forward to introducing you to Amey Parwal. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Amey, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I feel like the biggest misconception people have about my business is that my partner Max and I are amateur high school students who are trying something new. But in reality, we are serious about our academy and we truly want to coach people who are looking to play on their school’s varsity team
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Amey Parwal and I am a high school Junior at MICDS. I run a tennis academy called MATA (Max and Amey’s Tennis Academy) with one of my closest friends Max. We are ranked tennis players who have each won team tennis state twice. We primarily coach middle schoolers and elementary schoolers who eventually want to play varsity high school tennis
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My father. He has been a very important role in my whole life; he encourages me to try new things and always makes sure I am moving in the right direction. He understood me better than I understood myself, always telling me that I should try doing something because he knew I would enjoy it.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, every entrepreneur no matter how old or how successful has experienced a time when they felt like giving up. Going into my Freshman year of high school, we tried to market as much as we could, but nothing seemed to work. We had no clients all throughout the summer of 2023. However, we looked past that loss and decided to learn. We turned towards our upperclassmen mentors, and they gave us strategies to gain loyal clients and expand our network. Eventually, we gave our first lessons, and they did not stop there. Our inbox was filled with new parents interested in us giving lessons to their child and we built great relationships throughout the summer of 2024. Even though we failed our first year, we stuck with our passions and decided to continue, no matter the setback, and in the end it worked
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that camaraderie, school, and relationships really matter to me. To me, it is important that I always look out for my friends and they always look out for me, especially when one of us needs it. I also love to maintain great relationships with everyone around me because I love talking to people. My friends would emphasize school as well because of how much I study and spend time working on my assignments.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes I have been very excited about my work, especially during the first few months. For example, when we got our first email that someone wanted their children to take lessons from us, Max and I were very excited. What we had been trying to build for over a year finally happened, and from there, things only got better. More people started messaging us and we were giving lessons left and right. But throughout my whole career, I was most excited when we got those first messages.
