An Inspired Chat with Ravie Junior

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ravie Junior. Check out our conversation below.

Ravie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
We were invited to do TEDxStLouis. Our segment was a combo of storytelling and live music. At the end, we received a standing ovation. Later that night, a friend who was visiting from Indiana said y’all got a standing ovation. I’ve been to several TED talks and I’ve never seen anyone get a standing ovation. I was proud of that, humbled. We all were.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! I’m Ravie, trumpet player with the Red and Black Brass Band. We’re a brass band from St. Louis that specializes in second line and funk. Red and Black has been a premier band in the city for the last five years, playing festival, venues, weddings, parades, funerals, and parties. Our debut album, “We Are The City,” is available on all major streaming platforms so check it out. It’s a lot of fun.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Betrayal and a lack of trust breaks bonds.
A whole lotta love restores them.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh sure… certainly. The thing is character is defined by what you do when you’re down, you know, when you’re not ok. Those are the moments that make you who you are. So we gotta just keep going. It always gets better.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say so. As a band, that’s what makes the Red and Black’s sound so powerful. It’s because of the sincere nature of the people playing the instruments. We love music and we just want to help people feel good. So yeah… what you see is what you get.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Honestly it doesn’t matter what people say. Hopefully we do things to influence the moment in a positive way. As a band, we just want to put good music out in the world so maybe at some point, sooner or later, somebody will turn it on and feel just a little bit better about whatever it is they need to feel better about.
