Angela Skurtu of Chesterfield on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Angela Skurtu. Check out our conversation below.

Angela, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently I have been working on my “Open Bedroom Doors Show,” – Saving the world one bedroom at a time! Here is the playlist. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqck0ypOkthwazzdobE8cLUK-kvdcaPiH&si=TCvXQ0jdoDQzNyjZ

Doing this show has brought out a lot of different challenges and feelings for me. I have been in podcasting since 2017. I had my first show, “The About Sex Podcast” for a long time, producing episodes until around 2021. Then I burnt out from podcasting and took a break from hosting my own show.

In the meantime, I continued to get interviewed for other people’s podcasts and shows. I watched how people who were successful made their podcasts and shows more of a business. The business evolved dramatically over the course of the 4 years I took a break-including that more podcasts were adding video to their shows.

This year, I rebranded and started up my show again. This time, I got help with podcasting team behind me. I knew I wanted to be successful with the show and I knew I needed other people to help support me in the journey. I also didn’t want to feel so alone anymore.

Since starting the new show, I have learned how to approach the show from a business standpoint-working towards affiliate marketing, sponsorship, and collaboration. I have learned a lot about how to use the Show and Podcast to both support my own business and create powerful content for other people in the couples health and wellness industry.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Angela Skurtu, M.Ed., LMFT-S, CST-S

Hi, I’m Angela Skurtu—and I open bedroom doors (literally and metaphorically). As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist (and supervisor for both), I help couples who are great roommates become great lovers again. Think of me as your guide from the friend zone to the sexy zone—no shame, no awkward silences, just real talk about real relationships.

I’m the author of three books, including my latest: From Fck No to Fck Yes Sex! (yes, that’s the real title), and the host of The Open Bedroom Doors Show—where we dive into everything from awkward first times to reigniting passion after 20 years of marriage. Catch the show on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqck0ypOkthwazzdobE8cLUK-kvdcaPiH

When I’m not talking about sex positions on an actual bed, I’m writing the slightly less steamy (but no less important) stuff—like Helping Couples Overcome Infidelity: A Therapist’s Manual (yes, there’s a whole book on how to survive the ultimate relationship plot twist) and Pre-Marital Counseling: A Guide for Clinicians (because it turns out “I do” is easier said than done without a little prep work). Think of them as the behind-the-scenes scripts for keeping love alive when the drama gets real.

I have a knack for making the tough stuff about relationships sound a lot less intimidating—and sometimes even fun. I’ve spoken at local, national and international conferences on everything from sex and intimacy to infidelity, conflict, and the art of keeping love alive long after the honeymoon stage. I don’t just stop at the podium. I also host couples retreats where people can reconnect without Wi-Fi, and “Dinner with a Sex Therapist” events where we mix relationship advice with dessert (because honestly, both are better with a little sweetness).

Whether I’m diving into the science of desire, unpacking the mess of marital spats, or exploring how couples can rebuild trust, I bring a mix of humor, honesty, and real-world strategies. Because let’s face it: relationships are complicated, but talking about them doesn’t have to be boring.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was told again and again by my father, “You should have known better.” This caused me to develop some trauma around making decisions and not knowing what I am doing. I don’t believe this anymore. There is too much to know in this world and that type of thinking has at times prevented me from learning from my mistakes or trying new things. I now say to myself, “It’s okay to not know things. What can you learn?” This helps me stay curious and learn consistently. It also helps me take in feedback. Even when it is given critically, I am kind to myself in how I accept the feedback.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Back in 2024, I noticed my clients started slipping away. I once had a very full therapy practice and suddenly, my client caseload dried up. Like people would schedule, but then cancel their appointments or I would have full weeks with barely anyone scheduled. I had a lot of stops and starts trying to figure out the next steps. How would I get people back in the office? What was I doing wrong? Why was I no longer getting contact forms for my website?

Up to this point, I believed I knew a lot about business, marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing. Suddenly, it felt like everything I knew was flipped upside down on it’s head. I considered getting a job! Which for me, is a big deal! I have been a successful private practice business owner as a therapist since 2012! I seriously wondered if running a business was still a good choice for me.

It turns out that the Walmart of my practice-Better Help- hit therapists across the country. Our field used to be untouched by big markets and big business. Now, there was something redirecting people away from my practice. It also turned out that google had created a lot of changes to their SEO and many businesses were struggling with being seen.

Recently, when I was struggling with some self doubt, my husband was talking with my kiddo about me and my feelings. He explained, “Olivia, your momma is an explorer which means she is often going out into unknown territory and exploring strange and unknown lands. Sometimes, she gets caught in the weeds, but she always figures out how to move forward.” My husband really shifted my perspective on business that day. I am an explorer and I love exploring new business ventures and trying new things. It does require me to venture out into the unknown and take some risks. I have to be kind to myself as I take those risks. It was pretty cool to think of myself as a business explorer like Indiana Jones but for Sexual Health and Wellness.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Somewhat. There are versions of me you will never see and that’s good for me. The public version of me is still part of me, but I need things for myself. I need people and spaces where I get to let my guard down. I am on too many public platforms to be the unfiltered me entirely, but what you get is good enough for me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
She really did change the sexual landscape for future generations. Her one goal was to make sex education healthy, natural and fun. She had such a gift for teaching people in a way they could learn and understand. She also was so loving and kind. We miss her.
