Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Buss.
Hi Dawn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a mom, I was always passionate about birthdays. Every celebration had a theme, and every detail mattered. From the cake, the decor, the outfits, the perfectly coordinated tableware, even the goodie bags. My invitations sometimes even requested guests dress to match the theme.
At the time, I didn’t realize how much of my heart I was pouring into those parties. It was about creating moments my children would never forget. I loved seeing the excitement on everyone’s faces when they walked into the room.
Eventually, as my children grew older, the themed birthdays became less frequent. I missed the creativity, the planning, the transformation of a space into something magical. I missed the outlet that allowed me to bring ideas to life.
With a little encouragement and a lot of convincing from friends and family, I decided to take a leap and channel my passion into building my own business.
The idea quickly grew. More people began trusting me with their special moments and what began as a creative outlet turned into something far greater than I imagined.
As I approach my one-year anniversary this April, I’m incredibly grateful for everything this journey has brought into my life. I’ve learned patience, resilience and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve met the kindest people and had the opportunity to work in incredible venues.
I’m excited for Blown Away to continue growing, elevating my designs, and bringing even more unforgettable moments to life in the years ahead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve experienced many bumps in the road this past year. When providing decor for events, things just never go like you would like or plan. I posted a video of my first setup at a park in my hometown. It was a very windy day and I had never set up for an outdoor event. I found myself unloading the bags of balloons from my vehicle and then chasing them around the park. Slightly embarrassing but everyone enjoyed the clip.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in creating balloon displays for parties and events. I design custom garlands with backdrops, arches, centerpieces and balloon walls. I’m most proud of my ability to bounce back from a failed attempt and find creative solutions when things don’t go as planned. This journey has taught me that not every installation will be perfect, but every challenge is an opportunity to learn and improve. Being able to adapt, problem-solve, and keep moving forward has been one of the most rewarding parts of building this business.
What makes you happy?
More than anything, it’s the clients I create balloon displays for that bring me the most joy. Their excitement and smiles when they see their visions come to life is what makes this business the most rewarding.
