Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Wingate.
Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my company about 12 years ago shortly after my son was born. I’ve always been a creative person, and I was looking for something that would give me a personal sense of joy, aside from raising him.
After I started making a few different styles of bags, I had some friends and coworkers reach out to me about purchasing them. I quickly began to realize, the obsession was real. I couldn’t stop designing and sewing.
For about ten years, I would work on my bags during the day, then go to my “day job” in a bar at night. I was creating a business without even knowing it.
It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I decided to take a leap of faith and go all in, just to see what could happen. I’ve been full-time since September, supporting myself and my son.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely been a challenge. While doing this as a side hustle for years, I was never “all in”. I wasn’t giving it all the attention it deserved.
When I started, social media wasn’t really a thing. I would post some of my bags on Facebook for friends and family to see but never thought about how I could market myself. I’d say that was the most difficult part to navigate.
It wasn’t until 2014 that I decided to start an Instagram page for my business. Instagram was just starting to “pop off”. I found some groups of woman entrepreneurs and latched onto them and some of their followers.
Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s a different world to navigate when you’re just starting out. Self-doubt will ruin any opportunity more than trusting in yourself and your timeline. The Universe always has your timeline personalized just for you. Trust in it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I design and create beautiful handmade bags, sling bags, totes, wristlets, etc…
I recently began creating and designing my own fabrics which took my business to the next level. That’s what started to set me apart. I have definitely created a signature style which is starting to become recognizable out in the wild.
I’m so proud of the fact that I do it all. From design to the sewing to the photography, editing, styling, listings, website. It’s A LOT, but I’ve made it work.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Trust in your timing, and trust your gut. Don’t force anything.
