Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaiza’nae Lewis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started sewing in 5th grade. My aunt had a machine and I would have to come over her house sometimes and she sat me at her machine and said sew this piece for me while she was selling Avon upstairs and would come back and say sew this line right here for me and before you know it I had sewed together my first pair of shorts. And it’s no better feeling than seeing a final result that’s when I fell in love with sewing. Then my sister was on a step team let it shine had just came out coco jones had this huge tutu on and I wanted it so bad but couldn’t find it so my mom bought me fabric and said you can make it and I did my sister borrowed it for her step show before I knew it the whole step team wanted one as well and that was my first order. I made 5 tutus in less than a week and 17 years later I’m still known for my quick turn around.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Once I graduated highschool I wanted to take my business seriously. And that requires money. And it’s such a gamble when you invest all your money into your dream but you’re supposed to bet on you. but it’s extremely discouraging when you bet on you and fail and that happened to me a lot. I had my first prom order during finals week and I thought this is my big break so I prioritized that over school and failed in school and business was slow after. that one dress that was supposed to in my mind be my big break and it wasn’t. But being a entrepreneur you have to be ready for slow months and if you really have a passion for your craft you can’t let those slow months make you quit.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer, I’m a seamstress I’m a stylist sometimes a personal shopper if my clients needs me to be. And I also rap every now and then. But I am known for my brand Sahibõn. What I’m most proud of and what sets me apart is my customer service. And that’s what sets me apart .
