Hi Jeremiah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began at the age of three, banging on pots and pans at home. My family recognized something in me early on. My mother and father were the first to discover the gift, and like any supportive parents, they poured into me. They purchased my first drum set and began cultivating my talent in our local church. Even at three years old, I could keep a beat, stay in time, and flow in spontaneous moments of gospel worship.
By age five, after two years of evident dedication, my parents saw my commitment and got me my first official drum set. I practiced daily. It wasn’t the best kit, but it was mine, and I remained devoted. Throughout my formative years, I nurtured the gift — practicing on pillows, floors, and with my hands and feet. At six years old, I often got in trouble at school because teachers mistook my focus. I was either humming, tapping on desks, or using pencils as drumsticks.
As I entered elementary school, a teacher recognized my passion and recommended I join the jazz band. From elementary through junior high, I performed with the 118 Jazz Band, where I met Tony D., my band director who became instrumental in cultivating my craft. He taught me rudiments, drum fills, and grooves, and exposed me to multicultural music. I learned bossa nova, funk, pop, classical, and rock — developing the versatility to carry the gift God gave me into every musical space.
High school presented a challenge. I understood rudiments but could not read music, which prevented me from joining the jazz or marching bands. Still, that did not deter me. Behind closed doors, I committed myself to self-instruction. I taught myself to read music and matured as a self-taught musician.
Today, Jeremiah Williams, a native of Belleville, Illinois, stands as a prominent figure in the Illinois and St. Louis music scenes. Widely acclaimed for his inspiring and anointed drumming, he collaborates with esteemed gospel artists, showcasing a musical gift he attributes to God.
Serving as Youth Pastor at Greater Grace Ministries in Belleville, IL, Jeremiah seamlessly integrates his musical proficiency with his spiritual calling. His ministry is marked by a deeply moving, divinely inspired anointing. No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I had to overcome not being able to read music. trying to stay consistent why my friends used to go out and have fun. I had to stay back to practice and miss important events, dates and other obligations
