Check Out Kayla Wisdom’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Wisdom.

Kayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was raised in St. Charles, not far from St. Louis. I was a suburban girl but always had the drive to explore my country roots. I then met my husband, Josh, online. When we got married in 2014, I then moved to the country and was immersed in farm life! We only had cattle and some laying hens at the time. We eventually decided to process beef for ourselves, and I quickly told my husband that I didn’t feel right being able to raise this meat only for us! I wanted to share it.

Be able to offer others the opportunity to be able to feed their families with ethically and naturally raised meats. So, we decided to give it a go and see if people wanted to include our meat in their meals… and sure enough, it grew! We decided to name our farm Spring Creek Farms because of the living springs we have on our property and the creek that runs through it is named Spring Creek.

We started selling our meat in 2017 and then made our little endeavor into an official business in 2019. We have since been selling our products through social media, our website, and at the Tower Grove Farmers Market. We love everything we do, and we love that we are able to share that with others!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Being farmers, there are many things we encounter that can affect our way of living and our business. Drought, illness, and other natural disasters tremendously affect our business. The loss of animals due to these events becomes negative for so many people.

Physically—we end up losing sources of food for our family and others, financially—it can really put a strain on things, and emotionally—not knowing if we will have the next paycheck to keep things running, and also, we do build a connection with the animals we raise. Right now, the world is seeing some economic changes which are really impacting farmers greatly. Feed costs are up, material costs are up, and land costs are up.

We are not just animal farmers, but primarily grass farmers, so when we don’t have enough grass, we can’t feed the animals, which in turn means we do not have enough supply to meet the demand. Fortunately, we have been blessed and are able to continue operating and providing so many families with the meat that they love!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are farmers who raised ethically and naturally raised meats. We provide others with the opportunity to feed their families with healthy meat. We do offer other products, but our meat is what we specialize in and are known for. I am most proud of the farms that we have built. we have grown to 200 acres of some of the finest land in the Ozarks, and we are raising animals in the most natural way possible!

We have been able to produce some of the finest meat in Missouri, and we are beyond proud of that! What sets us apart from others is how we treat and raise our animals. We believe that they are here to sustain us and provide for us, so while they are under our care, we will make sure that they are treated with the highest respect and given the opportunity to live their lives as naturally as possible!

How do you think about happiness?
Taking photos of our animals. I love seeing them in their natural habitats and just enjoying life! Seeing how happy our animals are compared to others is definitely something that sets us apart from other farmers.

Another thing that makes me happy is seeing the look on people’s faces when they receive some of our meat! The excitement to try that Grass-fed and Finished steak or Truly Free-Ranged Chicken—there is joy there!

Knowing that they have found ethically raised meat that was happy while it was here, is now able to sustain someone else and make them happy too!
