Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylah Tiggs.
Hi Kaylah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was a kid. I would say I was more so on the adventurous side. I liked trying new things and getting my hands dirty. Since 4th grade, I’ve grown to master many skills and talents such as writing books, painting, doing nails, dancing, makeup, and currently designing and hair styling. I’m a serial entrepreneur. I like knowing how to do things in many fields. With designing, I’d grow up watching tv shows and movies, and certain actors and their styling really took me in by surprise as it became an inspiration to not only dress like that but, if I couldn’t find it in the stores, to learn how to make it on my own. My fashion sense began to expand. And I started to take lead of being able to vision pieces I want displayed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I honestly would not say it’s been smooth. If any entrepreneur says it’s been a smooth run, most likely, there are things they are leaving out. I’m currently an upcoming senior at The Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. There were times schoolwork took over and pushed back many things pertaining my business. I had bad investments, bad collaborations with other entrepreneurs, bad time management at times; I’ve lost over 4 people since I’ve started my business. All of them being family who I lost; my brothers, and my grandmother, who was also my only guardian, something like a mom to me; dying took a huge impact on me. I stepped into depression many times. Each time reflected me hurting either my business or my schoolwork.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a 21-year-old custom designer and seamstress! Born and raised in Chicago, IL. Loose clothing? Baggy pants? Rips in your jacket? You can come to me to fix things up for you to your liking! Birthday dress? Photoshoot outfit? Just a girl’s night outfit? Come to me, and we can get started on whatever vision you have from scratch! Anything pertaining clothing, I can do! I’ve been perfecting my skill in that as time goes! My work is one of the main things I’m known for; my work ethic comes second! My drive comes third! I’m most proud of me and my journey because 4th grade me would not believe I’m actually doing something long-term that I turned out loving and didn’t just test the waters and moved on to another field! I’m most proud of all those I’ve got to meet and work with along the way! They contribute a lot to my access and who I am today!
