Today we’d like to introduce you to KeKe Chanel.
Hi KeKe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began with my love for words. I fell in love with words at the age of 3 when my aunt taught me how to read and write. In 3rd grade, I was introduced to poetry and have written since. In 2012 I released my first book and have published 15 more.
When I was at my lowest—I didn’t love myself—words helped save my life. It’s funny how depression can come in like a flood and attempt to destroy or break your spirit. This happened to me in 1999. I’m so grateful for the words of close friends pouring into me and pulling me from the suicidal ledge.
Words brought back my light. They gave me a new zeal for life. Now, I use my platform to give others a voice to use their words to heal themselves but also empower others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had an amazing childhood. It wasn’t until my early 20s that life got tricky. One day I didn’t want to get out of bed. The next, I no longer wanted to be here because I was so overwhelmed I didn’t know how to stop the spiral I felt happening to me or ask for help. When you’ve been overlooked or simply ignored altogether, it’s easy to convince yourself it won’t matter if you’re no longer around. My struggle was feeling unloved by those I craved love from most. I had to dig myself out of that false reality and embody self-love not worrying about who thought I was being selfish. Had I not taken on that mentality, I wouldn’t be here now.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an award-winning author and owner of KeKe Chanel LLC, which is an umbrella company. There I am an Author, Coach, Content Creator, and Podcast Host. I started a lifestyle magazine called Nineteen in January 2024.
I love spotlighting others and helping them see their worth. Whether it’s helping them change their mindset, using their voice on my podcast, or sharing their story in my magazine, I am their cheerleader.
I’m proud that I never give up on myself and the greatest within me. I know that God desires more than what I desire for myself, and I put in the work to see it come to fruition.
Sure accolades are great, and success is the ultimate goal but I truly enjoy sowing into others. Money will follow. I live by an oath, “Trust God, lead with integrity, always choose intention, show up as your true authentic self, and be great!”
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I loved being outside in nature. I loved to run and explore and laugh while doing so. I didn’t like people too much, still don’t. Let me clarify. As an introvert, I don’t gravitate toward others. I have to feel the energy and I detest small talk. I enjoy deep and stimulating conversation.
I hid under my bed a lot growing up. It was my safe space. I colored and read books, wrote in my notebook or diary, and entertained myself. I had a ball.
I loved being different. Wearing patterns and bright colors was and still is a huge part of who I am. Most people don’t agree that I consider myself an introvert mainly because I can change the energy of others in a positive and impactful way. Or so I’ve been told.
