Today we’d like to introduce you to The Kelpies.
Hi The Kelpies, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We started off a few years ago under the moniker “Horse Magik” jamming up a the Lemp Brewery. We gigged around the city for a bit playing all-originals wherever people would let us. Eventually, we underwent a lineup change – our bassist switched over to guitar, we got a new bassist and vocalist, revamped our music and started working on new tunes. While the core of the songs and their structure remained mostly intact, the sound and style had become something new – as did the direction. It felt appropriate at this point to rename ourselves and thus The Kelpies were born. We booked a couple shows late 2025 to knock off the cobwebs and have been working on new material behind the scenes since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been ’bout as smooth as a craggy rockface. Anytime you get a group of people together you experience set backs and struggles, but ultimately you also reap the benefit those peoples strengths and perspectives. We’ve faced health issues, navigated interpersonal dilemmas and a significant lineup change which almost put an end to the project. With the help and encouragement of friends and good amount of self-resolve we were able to persevere.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are 4-piece funky punk band. We have an eclectic pool of influences ranging from progressive rock and metal to funk and jazz – everything in between and around as well. If we were known for anything, it would probably be our songwriting which takes more complex and technical ideas and tries to turn them into something more dynamic. We are not afraid to indulge some rather off the wall ideas or bombard the crowd with a flurry of notes and melody but we try to maintain a strong composition and storytelling with plenty of ‘dance-able’ or ‘moshable’ parts throughout.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
As a band our greatest memory was definitely playing with our heroes in Daikaiju at The Golden Record earlier this year!
