Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracee Lynn.
Hi Tracee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I launched my business initially in 2007 and it’s been quite the journey from then to now. When I initially launched I was passionate but always felt like I didn’t have the full “sauce” together of everything the brand could be. Life stepped in and I took a small detour with having my second child and then becoming a Zumba instructor. However, always in the back of my mind, Miss Lynn’s Candles of Affirmations was there and in 2020 I made a decision that it was time to step back into my full purpose and go after this brand at full speed.
I had learned so much more and grown in ways that would allow this brand to be more than just a product. I have much more to give and as I continue to even evolve from December 2020 when I re-launched till today. I can say that I’ve grown much more in my business and what I want to give. So now I am pouring affirmations onto every single candle vessel to be repeated when you light your candle, I have fragrances that are synonymous with assisting with anxiety and depression. Everything I try to do with every scent I make has a goal of peace in mind and beyond just the product and as I continue to evolve my brand, I’m venturing off into more of my calling which is coaching. There’s just more for me and coming into that has been phenomenal.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all and I’m ok with that, launching a business is all about learning, and in this day and age, we are all just trying to give our best selves. I had to learn to ask for help, learn when to give myself grace, and know when to take breaks, and even that I don’t have to do everything right then and there. We are taught that in order to be successful that we must go all the time but I have learned that I can’t give my best if I’m not taking breaks. I’ve made choices that may not be beneficial to the brand and had to rethink how do I want the brand to be viewed, who do I want to help, how do I want to impact every person that buys one of my products. I’ve had to learn that not every day I’ll make a sell but in those days I have also learned to use that time to strategize and to think about what’s next.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Making home fragrances is an artistry to me. I have to spend time not only thinking about scents and how to blend and what to blend with what to make distinctive fragrances I then come up with an affirmation and words that compliment that fragrance. How do I want people to feel when they light a specific scent and if it’s lifting a mood then I need the fragrance and the words that I assign to it to match. It’s not random at all, I put a lot of time into being as creative as I can be with names even and that’s hard because everybody wants everything to just be simple and in a society of fads I want to make sure that it’s very clear these are not “intention” candles per se, these are positive affirmations and as I say “hand poured with intercessional prayer and love” these candles and fragrances are meant to draw you into a different level of being and self-reflection. I want them to be deeper than just one word which is why I give multiple affirmations to each vessel. This is an art to me.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To be still and self-reflect. Get organized and make sure I’m maintaining and staying true to my goals and mission for the overall brand. The organization is the hardest when you have a lot of ideas but you will crash and burn without it. Making sure I calm myself to do the work before jumping the gun has been key and not over-extending myself. I am still working a full-time job so it’s key to not over-commit to events etc that will deplete my inventory. I need to ensure that for day-to-day customers until I can support both that I am being smart about things I overextend myself in order to keep the brand intact.
Also learning to be ok that I am not for everybody. I am a luxury brand and what this means is that I use luxury waxes, luxury fragrances & luxury vessels so it’s key to not devalue that. Alot of work is put into making sure that the brand is of a high caliber and I have to be ok that it can’t work for everyone. We have to be ok as business owners knowing what our niche is and staying in our respective lanes! Learning not to compromise!
