Community Highlights: Meet David Pruitt of Marshall & Pruitt Law Group, APC

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Pruitt

Hi David , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Originally, I’m from Toronto and prior to becoming an attorney I worked in the Banking sector for 15 years. After my undergrad, my plan was to succeed in finance, so I earned an MBA and never thought I’d become a lawyer and reside in the U.S.
The transition from Toronto to the U.S. and from banking to law occurred because my wife accepted a position with a California based company and, at age 32, I decided to go to law school in San Diego. Most people thought I was nuts, but the change seemed appropriate and worth the scrutiny. As time passed, my wife was recruited to a Missouri based company just as I was finishing law school. I wrote and passed the Bar in Missouri and later opened my own law firm.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The transition from Toronto to California was a difficult decision, especially since my wife and I became new parents for the first time. Essentially, it felt like we were depriving our parents, brothers and sisters from enjoying the new addition to the family. While in law school life was also tough. I was commuting 60 miles to school 3 days per week, our daughter was 2 years old at the time and my wife had to commute 30 miles to her job in Long Beach. Life was challenging, and to some extent, it still is. Managing a business, raising two children, marriage, and also ensuring family back home in Toronto remains a part of our lives is struggle.

As you know, we’re big fans of Marshall & Pruitt Law Group, APC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Marshall & Pruitt Law Group is a firm that operates in St. Louis, MO and in San Diego, CA. In Missouri, I practice business law dealing with transactional legal matters and litigation, typical disputes involve business contracts and the argument is always squarely about money. My business law clients include real estate investors, small and medium size businesses and everyday individuals. In addition, I also handle employment law cases, specifically representing the employer. My employment law clients are usually small business owners and I really enjoy helping entrepreneurs. In addition to my legal skills, I also hold a MBA (Accounting) and if the opportunity presents itself, I help small business owners with everyday accounting needs such as budgeting and auditing. I counsel entrepreneurs on how to mitigate risk and maximize profits. I’m unique because I understand business law, employment law and accounting.
The partner in my firm resides in San Diego, we met in law school and became friends because she was a single mom while in law school and life was challenging for her too. My partner handles personal injury cases and some commercial litigation.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
There will be bumps along the way, be patient and remain focused. If you are fortunate enough to have a support network such as friends or family, lean on them and listen, sometimes the best advice comes from the heart.
