Hi Elena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Elena, and my journey into the world of health and wellness began back in 2008 when I moved to the USA from Ukraine. Though my education is in software development, I’ve always been deeply passionate about herbs, vitamins, and holistic health practices. Moving to a new country provided me with the opportunity to start fresh, so I decided to make a bold change—leaving behind a career in technology and pursuing my dream to become a holistic consultant.
In 2008, I created an online store specializing in helping a worldwide community of families with special needs children. The need for quality, hypoallergenic supplements for children with sensitivities was something I had seen firsthand, and I knew that US-made supplements—some of the best in the world—were exactly what this community was relying on. It was incredibly rewarding to be able to provide these families with the support and products they needed to improve the lives of their children.
As my passion for health continued to grow, I pursued a degree in holistic health and began offering online consultations, helping others live healthier lives through natural remedies. A few years later, I opened a health food store, Specialty’s Health Food Market, right in the heart of St. Charles, charming Historic Main Street.
St. Charles is known as one of the most recognized historical spots in the country, and opening a business here felt like a dream come true. I feel such joy and pride in serving this incredible community—one that is so supportive and appreciative of local businesses. Every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to provide products that support the health and well-being of our neighbors and visitors alike.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but every challenge has shaped the journey. Running a niche market means constant adaptation. Sourcing high-quality organic, gluten-free, keto, and sugar-ree products, and the highest quality supplements that meet our customers’ needs is always a balancing act. Add to that the learning curve of maintaining a bakery section and keeping up with the growing demand for specialty items like organic skin care and herbal products.
As a first-generation immigrant, language barriers added an extra layer of complexity. Communicating effectively with vendors, customers, and navigating the necessary paperwork wasn’t always straightforward. It took persistence, patience, and a willingness to learn and adapt.
Through it all, the support from our community has been my greatest motivator. Their feedback and loyalty inspire me to keep going, even when the road gets bumpy.
