Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Winchester.
Hi Jeff, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started about 20 years ago when my wife, Jenny, and her friend Jeri needed a website for their ceramics business. First, I called around for prices, and then I thought, “No, I’ll try this myself,” even though I knew absolutely nothing about website development or SEO (search engine optimization). So I spent a lot of hours in research, learning, and banging my head against the wall. But I finally got the hang of it. Later on, I was building a website for a book publisher when their SEO specialist resigned. So I jumped in and said, “I’ll do that for you.” So then began the crash course on learning SEO. I’m very glad I know both of them now, as it helps clients save time and money when building a website with SEO from the start.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges in the website development and SEO industry is the rapid pace of change. One of the first things I do each morning is check my industry news feeds for changes in search engine algorithms, techniques, tools, and insights.
AI right now is an excellent example of this. It is really changing how the industry is done. In a lot of ways, it’s making it easier for people to get started in the industry, but it’s led to a lot of new businesses who copy and paste directly from AI with little to no human editing or strategy. This does their clients no favor. I definitely use AI in my business, but I use it as a tool. I spend most of my time developing a full strategy for my clients. This takes a lot of human thought, creativity, and oversight.
As you know, we’re big fans of My Site Ranks . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I design and develop websites for clients. Then, using different digital marketing strategies such as search engine optimization, social media promotion, paid advertising, and other channels, I get their business and their products out in front of as many possible customers as I can. The goal is not just to have a brochure website, but one that actually makes them money.
My specialty is coming up with content for my clients that is both engaging, ranks in the search engines, and converts their visitors into customers. Before I write the first page or article, I always come up with a full SEO content strategy for their website so that I have direction in every piece of content that I make.
One of the things I’m most proud of with My Site Ranks is that I work with clients of any size. Many SEO agencies and businesses will only work with people who can pay a steep monthly retainer, usually between $1000 and $5,000 a month. And if you’re a larger company, you need to spend that much to stay ahead of the competition. I will work with those companies, but I also work with small mom and pop businesses who can’t afford that in their monthly budget. I find out what their budget is, and then I design a custom SEO plan that will still get them rankings within their budget.
What I would like your readers to know is that SEO and digital marketing are within reach for their small businesses. Reach out to me, and together we will come up with a monthly plan that works for you.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Before I tried running a small business myself, I was like many people and thought, “Oh, if somebody owns a business, they’re probably making a lot of money.” This is just not true. Most businesses are barely making a living from it after all their expenses.
But they are providing jobs and services in the community, so that’s why I’m really proud of my pricing structure—so that I can help those businesses succeed.
