Community Highlights: Meet Mark Raymond, Jr. of The Split Second Foundation, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Raymond, Jr..

Mark Raymond, Jr.

Hi Mark, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In July 2016, I had a diving accident that resulted in a C5 spinal cord injury which presents as paralysis from the chest down. I was introduced to the healthcare system at a very young age and quickly learned how under resourced communities are for people with complex disabilities Once I was discharged from the hospital back home I found my experience to be very isolating and there was very little for me to do in the community with people that identified as disabled in the spring of 2018. We launched Split Second Foundation to address these needs with an initial , plan of opening a fitness facility for people with different abilities. We now operate a holistic wellness facility with fitness programming, mental health, case management, nutritional support, and resource navigation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road as no road in entrepreneurship is smooth, but you learn to get comfortable with adversity through the process. Some of the struggles along the way included lack of funding, lack of broader community support, lack of understanding on how to scale and grow a nonprofit, and lack of general management experience.
