Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Schlafly
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for food. In high school I became really interested in nutrition and cooking with the highest quality ingredients I could find. When it came to protein, I struggled to find sources that I felt good about—plant-based proteins weren’t satiating to me but animal-based proteins seemed harmful from a mass production standpoint. When I learned about bug-based protein, I realized it is the perfect blend of plant and animal proteins. Although I was excited about the protein, I wasn’t stoked about the source—it did not sound appetizing. So I decided to put on my creative chef hat and figure out a way to make crickets appealing. I discovered that milling it into a powder and blending it into delicious foods was a really great way to utilize this protein source. That’s how Mighty Cricket was born.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like every cutting-edge startup, our company has encountered many roadblocks and bumps along the way. Because we are in an emerging industry, the supply of crickets is not always consistent. Many of the farmers are new and are learning as they go. During COVID we had a farm shut down on us and not deliver product we already paid for. And there have been many learnings about the best road to gain adoption amongst US consumers.
We’ve been impressed with Mighty Cricket, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mighty Cricket manufactures products made from cricket protein such as chocolate and vanilla protein powder. We are one of the few cricket protein companies in the US leading the market to adopting bug-based proteins. I am most proud of building a self-sustaining company that has exposed millions of Americans to the concept of eating bugs.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I definitely view myself as a risk-taker. Building a company in an emerging industry is a highly risky career choice. I love taking on MIGHTY challenges and am not afraid of losing.
