Today we’d like to introduce you to Satin Bostic.
Hi Satin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always wanted to be a CEO and thought that would happen through the traditional corporate route. After being fired once and passed over for promotions several times, my frustrations overrode my fears and I leaped into creating House of Curves Bridal (HOCB).
I took all the money from my savings and 401k and invested in my business. I chose to focus on plus-size brides because they are pretty much ignored in the industry, not to mention the selection is horrendous. I watched my cousin who is a size 18 look for a dress and was disappointed with the selection or lack thereof at each bridal shop she attended, she eventually just purchased a dress off Craiglist. Witnessing this debacle birth the idea of HOCB.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges has been funding. I have this huge vision in my head of how I want to grow the business, but getting funded is not easy particularly if you are a small minority-owned business. Even getting the PPP loan was a struggle, my bank said I didn’t qualify but after speaking with a few other women in the industry that happened to be white, they assured me that I qualified and told me who to contact to get the ball rolling. We got approved so late in the process there was no time to get the second wave of funding, however I am thankful for the women that assisted me in getting what I got.
The PPP. loan helped me access funding that I never would have gotten approved for through bank loans. I find this quite sad.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
HOCB offers a luxe buying experience for curvy and plus-size brides.
We are an exclusive retailer for all of our gowns. This means we are the only boutique/store in our state that sells our bridal gowns. We select designers that are accustomed to creating styles for plus-size women, more boning, better structure and quantity fabrics.
We only take private appointments because we want each bride to have her time in the boutique, this is a safe place, no body shaming at all. Our goal is to support the bride in choosing whatever dress she loves.
The typical bridal shops samples are size 8 or 10, our samples are size 22 and above. We also service brides up to size 40!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I owe my success to pouring into people. I try my very best to support the people I love and actually quite a bit of stranger. You must give to receive and I’m a pretty big giver.
