Community Highlights: Meet Vivian Cockrell of The name of my business is Vivian Cockrell LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Cockrell.

Hi Vivian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my journey as an educator after earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Speech and Language Pathology. My first position was in a private preschool, where I developed a strong foundation in early childhood learning and communication support. I later transitioned into public education as a Title I teacher, working closely with students who needed additional academic support to succeed.

As my passion for leadership grew, I pursued opportunities to impact learning beyond the classroom. I served as an assistant principal, then principal, and eventually as a district administrator of instructional technology. In these roles, I worked to improve school culture, integrate technology into instruction, and ensure that teachers and students had the tools and support they needed to thrive. During this time, I earned an Advanced Certificate in Education Administration and later completed my Doctor of Health Professions Education, strengthening my ability to lead and develop programs effectively.

Throughout my administrative career, I maintained my professional license as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP). After retiring from district leadership, I returned to clinical service as an independent contracting SLP, providing virtual communication support to students in schools.

Across my career, I have designed transformative learning programs, mentored emerging professionals, and facilitated workshops that elevate leadership capacity, technology confidence, and collaboration in the workplace. I believe that when people feel supported, equipped, and valued, they rise to their greatest potential.

My work continued to evolve into entrepreneurship and organizational leadership. I founded Vivian Cockrell LLC to provide consulting, training, mentoring, and program development to support professionals and organizations. I also serve as Executive Director of Climate and Culture Changers, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting generations through education and community engagement. Additionally, I serve as Chief Operating Officer for Leaves Speak Healthcare, guiding interns and contributing to programs that support aging, workforce resilience, and community well-being.

Passionate about lifelong learning, I continue to build bridges that empower individuals of all ages to learn, lead, and thrive. Looking back, every step of my journey has centered around service, empowerment, and creating environments where people feel supported to reach their full potential. That purpose still guides me today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is rarely the word anyone would use to describe a career in education or leadership. My journey has been meaningful, but it has not been without obstacles.

Earlier in my career, as a Title I teacher, I faced challenges working with parents and staff who did not initially support pull-out programs. Some believed students were better served in the classroom and questioned why they were being removed for intervention. I focused on building trust through communication and collaboration. Over time, those same parents and colleagues became some of my strongest partners as they saw the positive results in student growth.

Moving into school administration brought new dynamics. I encountered gender bias both subtle and direct, including assumptions that leadership should look or sound a certain way. There were times when women preferred male leaders or male colleagues underestimated my abilities because I did not fit their idea of authority. Those experiences taught me to speak up, stand firmly in my expertise, and advocate not only for myself but for others who were not always seen or heard.

Through those challenges, I gained a deeper understanding of leadership. I learned that when you empower staff, build trust, and give people a voice in decision-making, they feel valued and invested in the educational process. Breaking down barriers became easier when everyone had a stake in the vision and believed that their contributions mattered.

Workplace politics also presented challenges. Leadership requires difficult decisions that are not always popular, even when they are necessary for students and staff. Navigating those pressures while maintaining integrity strengthened my resolve and sharpened my leadership principles.

Balancing a demanding career with family life was another learning curve. Being a wife and mother while leading schools required sacrifice, flexibility, and a constant effort to create harmony between the roles I cherished most. Over time, I learned that success is not about doing everything at once but being fully present where you are and giving yourself grace along the way.

Entrepreneurship brought another set of challenges. Transitioning from the structure of traditional employment to building something from the ground up required courage, resilience, and a willingness to learn new skills. There were moments of uncertainty, especially as I worked to establish my brand, build partnerships, and generate revenue while maintaining the heart of my mission. These challenges pushed me to grow in ways I never expected, expanding my confidence as a business leader.

Despite the challenges, I am grateful for every lesson. I grew stronger, more confident, and more committed to ensuring that others have the support and encouragement they need to persevere. Those experiences gave me a deeper understanding of the importance of mentorship, inclusion, and building workplace cultures where everyone feels valued and capable of leading.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories takes me back to Christmas time in St. Louis. My mother bundled up my older sister and me for a trip downtown, and we took the bus to get there. I remember the long walk from where we exited the bus down the cobblestone sidewalks toward the riverfront. It was blistering cold that day, and I can still feel the coldness as I think back to that day.

What I did not realize at the time was that my mother was Christmas shopping for us on that trip. That particular year, I wished for a tea set from Santa more than anything. My mother had learned that the tea set I wanted was at a store we were visiting that day. She always kept us close and never let us wander, yet somehow she managed to purchase that gift right in front of us without us noticing a thing.

When I woke up to that tea set on Christmas morning, I believed Santa had worked his magic. Looking back now, I recognize the real magic was my mother’s love, creativity, and the sacrifices she made to give us those moments of joy. That memory continues to come back to me every holiday season and reminds me of the warmth and care she poured into our childhood.
