Today we’d like to introduce you to Babajide Bashiru.
Hi Babajide, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m BABAJIDE BASHIRU. Born and raised in Nigeria. I’m the middle and only male child with two beautiful sisters. Growing up in Lagos, my parents was very keen on academics for their kids. At the age of 9, my parents discovered my art and creative skills and enrolled me to an art summer camp after school where I learnt art design, painting, screen prints e.t.c.
After high school, i went to college to study Art & Design. I graduated after 3 years and started my professional career as a graphic designer in the mobile smartphone industry. I led the creative design team where we focused on branding, creative marketing deliverables across West Africa region.
In 2019, I and my family moved to the united states. A new beginning for us, as we transition to a new life. We settled in St. Louis closely with other relatives who helped during this transition. I continued my education by studying cyber security at St. Louis community college. I graduated after 3 years and I transitioned into fashion and ux design.
During my time in college, I wanted to do more, I decided to explore my computer tech skills with my creative art background which made me discovered user experience design. I enrolled at a UX Design booth camp. This was a life changing decision for me as i was able to transition into different industry that excites me. I was able to help top global companies improve their user and customer experience through digital and creative design that solves complex problem and increase revenues.
I launched a fashion brand focused on street wear and active sports gear for male and female. While i was also focused on my ux design career. I design different pieces for different annaul climate seasons, which started as a hobby back in Nigeria. Right now my experience in the fashion design world expands to showcasing my designs on bigger stages like the NYFW, LAFW,STLBFW, e.t.c. Collaborating with different brands and hosting pop ups in different cities across the US.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it has not been a smooth journey over the years. I’ve experienced a few struggles in different phases of my life.
In Nigeria, struggles to find a job, after college, but i was able to secure my first professional role in 2017.
Another struggle was in my early years after moving to the US. I struggled with getting to understand the culture difference, climates, food, currency and other things. I hard to adjust to the new environment, learn more about the societal differences and other important things. It took me a while to get myself fully settled in, but as the years progress, i get to learn more and still learning.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a creative entrepreneur, I’m into fashion design and user experience design. During my transition in the US, I continued to work on my passion which has always been fashion and this led me to building Greatness Clothing as a community oriented brand a culture focused inspiring greatness and creates a positive value.
I wanted to create something that wasn’t just about clothes, but about growth movement and leaving an impact when I started, I had no roadmap just my creativity and dedication.
GREATNESS is a fashion brand community that grew from St. Louis. Built on creativity, collaboration, and purpose. From the basement to global pop-ups. Every piece tells a story that keep growing and scaling.
What sets me apart is that i wanted to stay through the vision I keep owing myself to create great product that represents the story that started this brand. What kept me going was to believe there was something bigger than me today. That’s one thing I took from Virgil Abloh because he was big on repping Ghana, and working with Ghanian creators and I think it’s really important to remember where it is that we are coming from.
What’s next?
As I evolve, I want to continue to transform my experience through fashion, art and tech.
What I plan to do is continue to build a legacy of greatness, not for my own glory, but for the betterment of humanity and the world.
My goals act as a roadmap, guiding me towards my vision of greatness. They keep me focused and motivated, even when the road ahead seems challenging.
