Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam And Jen Our True Crime Podcast.
Cam and Jen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our True Crime Podcast began the way many questionable life decisions do—with two lifelong best friends leaving a true crime convention thinking, “Hey… how hard can it be to start a podcast?”
We did what any reasonable people would do: we immediately went online, bought recording equipment we had absolutely no idea how to use, and assumed the rest would somehow work itself out.
It didn’t.
After several days of technical disasters, more than a few frustrated tears, and a crash course in audio editing, Our True Crime Podcast officially launched on July 11, 2018.
What started as two best friends talking about true crime has grown into one of the genre’s most beloved independent podcasts. Eight years later, we’ve surpassed eight million downloads, produced nearly 500 episodes, and built an incredible community of listeners from around the world.
So… Why the Name?
Believe it or not, coming up with the name was harder than you’d think.
For weeks, we tossed around title after title, but nothing ever felt quite right. Every idea was either too serious, too cheesy, or already taken. Meanwhile, almost every conversation seemed to include the same phrase:
“What should we call our true crime podcast?”
“Should we include crime statistics on our true crime podcast?”
“Should we have guests on our true crime podcast?”
Finally, Jen said, “Why don’t we just call it Our True Crime Podcast?”
And that was it.
The name perfectly captures what this podcast has always been about. It’s our podcast, not just ours because we host it, but because it’s shared with every listener who laughs with us, gasps at the twists, comes up with their own theories, and occasionally yells at their speakers.
From the very beginning, our goal wasn’t simply to tell true crime stories. We wanted listeners to feel like they had pulled up a chair with their favorite drink and were sitting down to talk through a case with friends. Every episode is thoroughly researched, and we never lose sight of the fact that we’re telling the story of someone’s worst day. Every victim was a real person who was deeply loved, and we believe they deserve to be remembered with compassion, accuracy, and respect.
Each week, one of us presents a case the other has never heard before, so the reactions and conversations you hear are completely genuine. While we love uncovering lesser-known cases from around the world, we’re also passionate about sharing stories from our own backyard, including cases from St. Louis, the Metro East, and throughout Missouri.
If there’s one thing that has kept people listening over the years, it’s probably our friendship. We’ve been best friends for more than forty years, so the conversations, laughter, and occasional rabbit holes are exactly what you’d hear if you were sitting at the kitchen table with us.
And the adventure doesn’t stop when we turn off the microphones.
In 2025, we launched Go on Vacation with Our True Crime Podcast, giving our listeners the chance to travel the world alongside us. What started as a fun idea quickly became so much more: a community of people brought together by a shared love of travel, true crime, and adventure.
Our first trip took us through the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland and England, exploring castles, haunted locations, and unforgettable historical sites. This summer, we traveled through Italy with ten amazing listeners. Five returned from our inaugural trip, and five were brand new. By the end of the tour, strangers had become friends, friends had become family, and memories had been made that we’ll all treasure for years to come.
Those trips have become one of our favorite parts of what we do, and we hope to make them an annual tradition. Whether you’re traveling solo, planning a girls’ trip, looking for someone to share your love of travel, or simply wanting a unique experience with like-minded people, we’d love to have you join us.
If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing the world with your favorite true crime podcast… there’s always room for one more.
Meet Us
I’m Cam, a high school Language Arts teacher by day and a true crime researcher every other waking hour. If there’s a crime documentary, investigative series, or true crime special out there, I’ve probably watched it… twice. I’m also the proud mom of two incredible adult children, one cat named Juno, who is absolutely convinced she’s a dog, and one delightfully grumpy senior cat named Buster.
And I’m Jen. I’m an avid reader, a wife, and the proud mom of two amazing adult children. I share my home with a mischievous West Highland Terrier named Reggie, whose digestive talents can clear a room, and two orange tabbies, Gilbert and Chad. I also have a soft spot for delightfully quirky décor, including heads- not like serial killer behavior, but decor. I promise.
Together, we’ve created more than a podcast. We’ve built a community of curious, compassionate, and wonderfully weird people who believe every victim has a story worth telling.
Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of Our True Crime Podcast has had its share of challenges. When we launched the show, we had no experience in audio production or journalism. We were simply two friends who loved true crime and believed that victims’ stories deserved to be told. We taught ourselves everything from researching and writing to recording and editing, and quickly learned there was far more to podcasting than just sitting in front of a microphone.
About six months in, we realized we needed help. We brought on editor Nico Vettese, who not only edits but also created our show’s music and now serves as executive producer. The team later grew to include producer Jesse Hawke and researcher and writer Lauretta Allen. What started as a two-person passion project has become a true team effort, and we are the first to say we couldn’t do it without them.
Another challenge has been the emotional toll. Researching true crime means spending hours immersed in heartbreaking cases, and we never lose sight of the fact that every victim was a real person with a family who still grieves.
Our True Crime Podcast tells the stories of people on the worst day of their lives. We believe every victim deserves to be remembered with dignity, and every family deserves to have their loved one’s story told with compassion, respect, and grace.
The podcasting world has changed a lot over the years as well. When we started Our True Crime Podcast, there were far fewer podcasts in this genre. Today, it’s a much more crowded space. Rather than trying to follow trends, we have stayed focused on what inspired us in the first place: covering lesser-known cases, doing thorough research, and telling each story with compassion. We believe that staying true to those values is what has helped us build such a loyal community of listeners.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to us is never forgetting that every case is about a real person, not just a crime. Every victim was deeply loved, and every family deserves to have their story told with accuracy, compassion, and respect. We put our hearts and souls into every episode, and we are very proud of the work we have created with Our True Crime Podcast.
We’re also incredibly grateful for the people this podcast has brought into our lives. We’ve had the privilege of meeting victims’ families, dedicated detectives, advocates, authors, and some truly amazing listeners. Those relationships have become one of the most rewarding parts of this journey, and we’ll never take them for granted.
