Conversations with Cameron Goewey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Goewey

Hi Cameron, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
86 Red started in 2019 playing in our hometown Alton before playing in STL a few months after lockdown from the pandemic happened. We quickly found a home playing in the house show scene in and around STL from about 2021 onwards, playing out as much as we could with friends both in Alton and the city. Throughout this time we had a lineup change with a new drummer and addition of a second guitarist, which along with being around the local punk scene our band really started to come into its own musically. We began as a heavy grunge and 90’s alternative inspired act I.E. Nirvana and Kyuss, and developed into incorporating more hardcore and post-rock elements into our music inspired by bands such as Gouge Away, Pissed Jeans and Slint. Two EP’s were released in 2022 and 2023, recorded with Alex St. Cin in our hometown studio Lighthouse Sounds featuring songs from our formative years before the lineup switch as we continued playing out and writing as often as possible. Our debut LP was just finished recording in summer of this year with Ryan Wasoba and should be out sometime in 2025 with 12 songs on it, all live tested through basement and other sorts of punk shows we played over two years. We’re still out playing shows in STL as often as possible, but are looking towards doing some out of town weekenders and hopefully get some more ears on the music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the hardest part about being in a band is staying motivated and continuing to chug along as a group. Every band goes through peaks and valleys, and not every show is gonna be the best show you’ve ever played, so you just gotta remind yourself why you’re still doing it. It takes work, a lot of work and dedication to keep a band healthy and moving which involves non-creative aspects that might not be super fun, but you just gotta push past that. The St. Louis scene has been very receptive to us over the years and people I’ve met through shows have been some of the best around, and that’s enough to hold onto.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
86 Red is a rock band in broad terms, combining elements from the various sub-genres and era’s of punk and alternative rock. We play loud aggressive rock music in the STL area and we just want to play some good music for people, hopefully get some moving, and have a good time doing it. We’ve got two songs coming out soon from our album recording session that I’m incredibly proud of, I think we’ve finally found our own unique voice and sound with these songs and this record. The riffs are getting meaner and faster, and bottom line with 86 is I want to play nasty riffs.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
86 Red consists of Cameron Goewey on vocals/guitar, DJ Redden on bass, Carter Noble on guitar, and Andrew Robertson on drums. The whole band deserves credit for writing the music and I’d give a special shoutout to Alex St. Cin and Ryan Wasoba for recording our music. I’d also give a shoutout to Brett Kutter from Shareholder for being a staunch supporter, my friends in bands who’ve become close with us over the years, our parents, as well as my old college classmate Jim for coming up with the name 86 Red, inspired by a story about a bad gig I told him about.
