Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Stumbo.
Hi Colleen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has always been a big part of my life. I started playing violin in elementary school, taught myself piano in high school, and fell in love with the harp in college. After earning my degree in Music Therapy from Maryville University, I spent seven wonderful years working as a hospice music therapist—witnessing firsthand how music can comfort, connect, and heal.
I later completed my Masters in Music at Webster University and began performing throughout the St. Louis area. I’ve had the joy of playing with the St. Louis Symphony, St. Louis Philharmonic, the Town & Country Symphony, the Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis, Winter Opera, and Union Avenue Opera, as well as performing at over a hundred weddings and special events. Each performance, whether in a concert hall or an intimate gathering, feels like a chance to share something beautiful and meaningful.
My yoga journey began in college and has become a grounding, inspiring part of my life. I recently completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training at Namaste Yoga Studio in Kirkwood and now teach at both Namaste and Club Fitness. I teach hot yoga, gentle vinyasa, and hatha yoga—each class is focused on connection, breath, and presence. What I love most about yoga is the community it creates—the friendships, and the connection it helps me cultivate within myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Earning my master’s degree during COVID was a challenge —classes on Zoom, performances through a screen, and the loss of that shared musical energy. Many weddings I played during that time took place in backyards, often with just a handful of guests gathered around. I’m grateful I was able to finish my degree and find ways to celebrate love and life in uncertain times.
In 2022, I was in a car accident that forced me to pause both my music and yoga practice. I couldn’t play the harp or step onto my mat, and for a while I didn’t feel like myself but with a lot of patience (and physical therapy) I was luckily able to begin again. Returning to music and yoga was slow and careful, but with time I was able to rebuild my strength and find my rhythm again
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart is the combination of my diverse musical background, my training as a music therapist, and my yoga experience. It enables me to share music and movement in ways that are personal to my clients.
