Conversations with Maddy Jolliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddy Jolliff

Hi Maddy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before I started my brand I was just a mom with a problem and no solution. My oldest son, who just turned four, has been struggling with eczema since he was a small baby. When he turned two his eczema breakouts became really severe and painful. He would have softball size, bright red, flaky patches on the backs of his knees and in the folds of his elbows. He was constantly scratching almost to the point that they would bleed. For the longest time I had been using the methods and store bought products with chemical ingredients recommended by our doctor but nothing was working. My son was still miserable and I was becoming more and more frustrated. I hated not knowing all the ingredients in the products I was using and the effects they could possibly have on my son.
I started researching natural methods that might be able to help and stumbled upon the skincare benefits of beef tallow. I began to look deeper into beef tallow skincare, how to make it, other natural ingredients that could be added for more benefits, how to use it, etc. I then made my very first jar of moisturizer and tested it on my son. The results were incredible! Within a few days of using it I noticed my son’s eczema was clearing up. No more softball size patches,no redness, no inflammation and no scratching. It was gone! I was amazed. I couldn’t believe the incredible healing abilities of this beef tallow moisturizer.
After that there was no going back. I started my brand, Ozark Highlands Tallow & Co. and started down the road of making my brand a real business. I have an online store and currently have a few local shops in the area that host my products, The Center Cut Slaughter & Meat Processing (Farmington, MO), Indulgence Tanning & More (Jackson, MO), Heavenly Hills Homestead (Desoto/Potosi/Festus/Farmington), and StellaNova Spa (Festus, MO).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not. Some struggles I have personally faced would be the fact that I am also a stay at home mom while trying to run my business. My youngest son is a year and a half and stays home with me during the day so trying to do the work for my business everyday while trying to manage and take care of my youngest son at the same time can be challenging. Another struggle I have faced would be getting my products into more local stores in the Saint Louis area. While I am very grateful for the business relationships I have created, it is still very challenging to create more business relationships from scratch with products that are very unique and not well known to the public.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My business, Ozark Highlands Tallow & Co., creates natural personal care products made from locally sourced beef tallow. I purchase the beef fat from my local USDA certified meat shop, The Center Cut Slaughter & Meat Processing, I render the fat down to remove any impurities to create high quality tallow. I then fuse the tallow with other natural ingredients to create high quality personal care products for skincare and haircare. My brand is best known for the tallow moisturizer and the tallow deodorant. Many of my customers both individuals and the shops/locations that host my products, have stated that the tallow moisturizer and deodorants are my best sellers.
I am most proud of the fact that my products offer families and individuals a natural alternative to large name brand personal care products that work just as well if not better and that they can trust. Every product I have created is made with natural ingredients and tested on the most important people in my life, my own kids. When I say my products are gentle, nourishing, and truly work, I mean it because I’ve seen the results firsthand on myself and my children.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I started my business not because I saw the popularity of this niche about to explode or because I just wanted to make money. I started this brand because I had a personal problem and no solution. Once I found the solution I thought there must be other moms, dads, and families out there in the same position I was in. They might be dealing with the same frustration of trying everything with no results, having the same reservations about using store bought products with chemical ingredients on themselves and their kids, and wanting a natural solution.

What does success mean to you?
My definition of success is still something I am trying to figure out, but I think being successful means having the guts to try to make something of yourself while also possessing the grit and perseverance to keep going even when things get hard. It’s something that your personal definition of it will always be changing based on the goals you set out for yourself. Just don’t stop trying to achieve those goals no matter what. I think Andy Frisella said it best with these two quotes:
“The difference between those who succeed and those who fail is not talent but perseverance.”
and “Success is never owned; it’s rented and the rent is due everyday.”
