Conversations with Nela Navarrine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nela Navarrine.

Nela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Becoming an artist was not in my plans until I moved to St. Louis from Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009. The wonderful people and art institutions in St. Louis welcomed my art and gave me the confidence to become an artist. My friends, The Foundry Art Center in St. Charles and the STL Art Fair’s “Emerging Artist Program” were key in my career when they accepted and inspired me to continue this journey.

How did art come to my life? To heal a loss through colors. I found peace and joy in painting, and this amazing feeling of expressing myself through colors has increased throughout the years. Painting makes me smile and my paintings make their owners smile too. It is a perfect chain of joy!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I received art education only in elementary school and my background is in IT consulting. My first struggle was to accept that I could try something different in an unknown world. Be brave enough to start in a new “field”, speaking a different language, and in a new country!

I will also say that being accepted as an artist was also big stress for me. I was scared when showing my work, and I always wondered, is it good enough? I received many “no’s” along the way but each yes gave me hope to continue trying.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint mainly flowers and big botanicals with oil and encaustic (hot wax) on a canvas or between layers of resin. I love vibrant colors, layering the resin, fusing the wax, blending the colors. I enjoy every step of my work and enjoy exploring new techniques and mediums.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think that there are still many empty walls to be painted and embellished by works of art. There is a growing business for digital art but demand for handmade and hand-painted art will continue. The brush has a heart that will never stop beating. I believe that businesses in St Louis will grow a lot in the next years!
