Today we’d like to introduce you to Owen Weber.
Hi Owen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Greetings, I’m Owen Weber, lead singer of the band Olive. I have done a handful of these VoyageSTL interviews in the past, so I’ll try to keep things current with you guys. Since the last interview, the boys in Olive have been working hard on releasing a new record. We just finished up our first leg of the tour in September and are going on our final leg mid-October, with an album release show scheduled for Nov. 6th at Off Broadway in St. Louis. Our next release, entitled “Streak Of Ties”, displays the growth all four of us have experienced in the last three years as a band. Featuring a great increase in production quality, songwriting, and overall vibe, we are extremely excited to share our new record with you guys in late October/early November.
In other personal news, I joined the STL screamo/emo band St. Clair and have been touring with them around the Midwest this year. I also joined the jazz fusion band Lofty’s Comet, also out of St. Louis, both of which released EP’s this year entitled “To All The Weight We Can’t Carry” and “The Fool,” respectively. Instead of singing in these bands, I play drums (which is my main thing). I am looking forward to continuing to play with all three of these bands in the future!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This year I finished my undergrad at SIUE in jazz performance on drums, and let me tell ya, that last semester was no joke. Not only was I recording two EPs for two different bands, but I also had to learn a multitude of jazz songs to complete my undergrad. During the recital times in early May of this year, I had to play in roughly 8 hour-long recitals, all with unique music, and not a week after graduation, I went on tour for two weeks with the band Lofty’s Comet around the southern United States. After that tour concluded, I immediately went on the road for 3 weekends with the band St. Clair in June. If that seems like a lot, I then proceeded to work on a fixer-upper for the remainder of the summer until this August, when I started my master’s degree at SIUE. Phew! The year isn’t over yet either! I still have the rest of the Olive tour and release show, along with a few more weekends of touring with St. Clair in November, along with some other gigs and such. Overall, I am definitely looking forward to some much-needed time off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As previously mentioned, I and the frontman/lead writer/lead singer of my band Olive featuring my good friends Cole Raub (Guitar), Jake Gordon (Bass), and Ian Whitmore (Drums) and am also the drummer for the bands St. Clair and Lofty’s Comet. I also play jazz drums weekly at the Post Commons jazz night every Thursday in Alton, IL.
What’s next?
After the release of Olive’s “Streak of Ties”, I think I might go out on a nice long vacation… (only kidding!)
In the future I plan on finishing up my masters degree and continuing to tour the USA with my bands!
