Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Peebles.
Hi Stacy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Kinloch, in north county St. Louis, I was raised with strong family support and a sense of community. I am the daughter of Melvin and Patsy Peebles. I am the fourth born of five siblings. I was, am and will always be a Daddy’s Girl. Although my father now walks amongst the ancestors, I still feel his presence every day. My parents raised me to be confident, self assured and never be afraid to stand up for myself.
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to “help people” and by the time I reached high school, I had grand ideas of changing the world. It was in high school that I decided to become a social worker. I chose this profession because I felt like the black community was underrepresented in this field and we all know that representation matters. I wanted to work in a role where I could advocate for people that looked like me and do my part in eradicating the disparities in service delivery.
I hold a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from Tennessee State University, I am a proud HBCU graduate. Go Big Blue! I hold a Master of Social Work Degree from Washington University and a PhD of Public Policy and Analysis from Saint Louis University.
I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in the states of Missouri and Illinois.
Over the years I have worked with a variety of diverse populations including HIV/AIDS, criminal justice, substance and healthcare. I currently work in private practice where I focus on working with women around self-love and empowerment.
I am blessed to be able to work in a capacity where I help others identify and hone into their strengths. My goal is to help them learn to utilize their strengths to rise up from situations that may have left them feeling defeated. I recognize the importance of being a vessel for the healing of others. Through my work, I feel that I have achieved my goal of being a change agent, and in my small way have played a role in changing the world, one client at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a African-American woman, I feel the most challenge has come in the form of discriminatory practices in the workplace. In many workplace situations I had to contend with behavior that is now labeled as “micro-aggressions” and historically there has been a pressure for black professionals to “code-switch” in an effort to be accepted and embraced. I feel that I have always been able to tap into my sense of self-empowerment and self-love which enabled me to speak up about injustices and discrepancies against either myself or the clients that I serve.
Unfornately, I believe that this form of racial trauma continues to impact professionals of color. This subject comes up a lot in the work that I do as a therapist and coach with my black women. I will always do my part to advocate for myself and others.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
