Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lane.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My entire life, I’ve been surrounded by the arts. Music has always been around me. I got my first DJ board in 2017, but didn’t take it seriously until Fall 2023. My debut as a DJ was the first party I threw, From the Bayou to the Riverfront. This was a Black Mardi Gras party that I threw in my hometown of St. Louis. From that moment, I knew I wanted to pursue being a DJ. Witnessing so many people enjoy themselves, dancing, and celebrating being in the moment. I knew that was the space I wanted to be in.
After the party, I began to practice every day. Dallas at that time was my primary home. I traveled to St. Louis very often for DJ gigs, that it made sense to move back. Moving back to St. Louis was one of the best decisions I could make.
Since then, I have received so many amazing opportunities. From opening for Zack Fox at the Pageant to DJ’ing for JT, The City Cinderella, at WerQfest. St. Louis has given me so much love and opportunity since I have been back.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges a long the way. Personally, I had to unlearn perfectionism. Being a DJ taught me that it is totally fine (and normal) to make mistakes. Things happen, you have to learn from it and move on. This art has definitely taught me that.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a DJ, I specialize in high-energy sets across genres like house, techno, club, R&B, and hip-hop. I focus on creating experiences where the music isn’t just heard, it’s felt. My goal is to tap into the emotions of my audience and create a connection where the music becomes a feeling. I’m curating an emotional experience that resonates deeply, whether it’s excitement, nostalgia, or pure joy.
I am most proud of curating an event called, Let’s F*cking Dance (LFD). The purpose of LFD was to bring back the dance floor, and we’ve been doing just that. It’s been amazing to see so many people come out to this party, feeling free and being their authentic selves. I’ve also enjoyed seeing so many DJs come through and grace the LFD stage. Hearing them step outside of what they normally play or even expand more on the sounds that you typically hear. It’s been an honor to see them grow even more.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think what’s most surprising is when people hear that I started my creative career as a Photographer. That’s how I was initially introduced to the St. Louis arts community.
