Hi Amie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From the earliest days of my childhood, I have always dreamed of being a fashion designer. If I wasn’t meticulously crafting garments from tissue paper or transforming blankets into makeshift ponchos, I was passionately repurposing old clothes into imaginative new creations. Yet, over the years, I found myself dabbling in various other pursuits—nails, makeup, playing the piano, and a variety of sports—without ever feeling a genuine spark of passion for those endeavors. Throughout those formative years, I consistently gravitated back to fashion, sensing an undeniable pull. It was like I was endlessly searching for something more fulfilling, oblivious to the fact that my greatest joy was right in front of me; I simply hadn’t recognized it as my true calling.
Then, a little over a year ago, a revelation struck me. I envisioned creating an outfit for a concert I was eagerly anticipating: Brent Faiyaz, LOL. This concert was not merely an event; it was a significant milestone for me. After countless late nights and early mornings, I meticulously designed Trendy Figures first custom pieces , that imbued me with a sense of confidence, beauty, and the exhilarating feeling of being ready to conquer the world. In that pivotal moment, I realized I possessed something extraordinary, particularly because I was now more mindful and intentional in pursuing my passion.
Since that moment , I had temporarily set aside my needle and thread to immerse myself in content creation, producing engaging GRWM videos for Instagram and TikTok that showcase my distinctive style. Behind the scenes, the blueprint for Trendy Figures was being carefully sculpted. Today, I design captivating pieces for various fashion shows across the city, with ambitious aspirations to showcase my work at NYFW. Thus, I am perpetually creating and refining my craft, show by show, experimenting with innovative techniques to ensure my dreams materialize. My ultimate vision is to cultivate “a Brand, a Culture, For Everyone.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. I struggled with self-doubt, procrastination, distractions, and the tendency to be unintentional. I often found myself not being true to myself in an effort to fit in with others. However, the moment I began to realize that the only person who can truly fulfill me is God within me, everything changed. It was then that I discovered my true calling and started to appreciate my gifts more and more, and quickly saw fruit from it .
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I graduated from college with a degree in fashion merchandising, which opened the door to a rewarding career in the retail sector of the fashion industry. Currently, I serve as the Area Sales Manager for the Ladies Ready-to-Wear (RTW) department at Dillard’s. My journey began four years ago as a sales associate, and I have had the privilege of working my way up through the ranks, earning four promotions during that time. Throughout this experience, I have focused on building connections and deepening my understanding of the fashion business. This role has allowed me to work with a variety of garments, giving me the opportunity to observe different fabrications and sewing methods. This hands-on experience has not only enriched my knowledge but also fueled my passion for leading and inspiring my team.
Inside and outside of the workplace, I am recognized as a fashion designer and a fashion guru, known for creating clothing and styling videos for my followers. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of receiving requests for custom garments, styling tips, and advice, as well as invitations to participate in various fashion shows—experiences that bring me immense joy. It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, I was sitting on this talent, and now, opportunities are unfolding before my eyes.
What I am most proud of is the understanding that when you unlock your true potential and focus on nurturing it, the possibilities are truly endless. Even this interview is a testament to that journey, and I can’t express how deeply grateful I am for the opportunity to share my story. Thank you.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes. Although my company supported me during my time away, I began to rediscover myself. I started creating custom fashion masks, and that’s when I began producing styling videos. With more time on my hands, I was able to let my creativity flourish, and that’s when the seeds of my passion started to take root. While those initial efforts were somewhat unintentional and only lasted for a short period, in hindsight, I realize that those moments were crucial for planting the seeds of my future endeavors.
Moral is it is important to sit with yourself , and figure out what’s your best interest . When the world stops, what are YOU going to do , who are you ? What can you do to keep shining in a dark place.
