Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Arndt.
Hi Austin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I come from a background that had a lot of instability early on. My parents separated when I was young, my father struggled with mental illness, and my mom worked multiple jobs to support our family. Growing up in that environment, I didn’t always have the tools to process what I was dealing with, and I went down a difficult path at a young age.
For years, I struggled with addiction and found myself in and out of programs and the legal system. Looking back, a lot of that came from not knowing how to express what I was feeling or how to deal with it in a healthy way.
What changed things for me was finding an outlet through writing. I had always been drawn to poetry, and that eventually turned into music. It gave me a way to be honest, to process my experiences, and to turn something negative into something creative and productive.
After facing serious consequences, I made a decision to take control of my life. I committed to growth, discipline, and staying clean, and I started putting real focus into my music. I began performing, collaborating with other artists and producers, and building my own independent brand from the ground up, including my own merchandise and online platform.
One of the biggest milestones for me was touring nationally in 2019, which showed me that what I was building could actually reach people. Since then, I’ve continued to grow not just as an artist, but as a person, learning consistency, accountability, and how to turn my experiences into something that connects with others.
But honestly, one of the biggest highlights of my life now isn’t just music , it’s who I’ve become outside of it. Being a father, a husband, and a dependable friend means everything to me. Those roles keep me grounded and remind me daily why I stay disciplined and continue pushing forward.
Today, my purpose with music is bigger than just creating , it’s about using my story to show that change is possible and that you can turn your life in a different direction. Everything I’m doing now is built on that mindset of growth, resilience, and creating something meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of my journey has been about learning the hard way and then choosing to grow from it.
One of the biggest struggles was overcoming addiction and learning how to replace destructive habits with positive ones. That wasn’t something that happened overnight,it took real discipline, accountability, and a lot of internal work. Music became a huge part of that process for me. It gave me a healthy outlet to express what I was going through and helped me stay focused on something productive.
Another challenge has been learning how to stay grounded in why I do this. I’ve built an incredibly supportive fanbase over time, which I’m grateful for, but I had to realize that this path has to come from within first. I have to want this for myself and build a life that’s meaningful beyond just the music.
Losing my father was also a major turning point. He was one of my biggest supporters and really believed in me using my story to help others. After he passed, that pushed me even more to stay on the right path and honor that support by continuing to grow and create.
From a career standpoint, there have been setbacks too. I toured nationally in 2019, which was a huge step forward, but when I was preparing to build on that momentum with a solo run, the pandemic hit and changed everything. Instead of stopping, I shifted my focus into creating more music and continuing to build behind the scenes.
And on a personal level, balancing everything hasn’t always been easy. Being an artist while also being a father, a husband, and handling real-life responsibilities adds another layer of pressure. Touring and being away from home is a challenge, especially with a young child, but it’s also something that keeps me focused and disciplined because I know what I’m doing this for.
Overall, the struggles have been real, but they’ve also shaped who I am. They’ve taught me resilience, consistency, and how to turn setbacks into motivation, and that mindset is what continues to drive me forward today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an independent artist, writer, and performer known as YT, originally from Rock Springs, Wyoming. My work is rooted in real lived experience and focuses on turning personal struggle into something creative, honest, and relatable. I specialize in emotional, story driven music that blends raw lyricism with melody, often pulling from darker life experiences but transforming them into something that can connect with people on a deeper level.
What defines my work is authenticity. I don’t separate my life from my art, everything I’ve lived through, from addiction and recovery to loss, growth, and rebuilding my life, has shaped the music I create. That honesty is what people tend to recognize in my sound. It’s not built around image or trends, it’s built around truth.
I’ve built my career independently from the ground up, handling writing, recording, performing, touring, and managing my own brand and merchandise. One of my major milestones was touring nationally in 2019, which gave me a real understanding of my reach and the impact my music can have beyond my home base.
I’m also very intentional about building a long-term identity as YT. I own my trademark and have been focused on establishing a consistent presence across my work and platforms. Being an independent creative means I’ve had to be very hands-on with everything , from the music itself to how it’s presented and discovered, especially coming out of a smaller place like Rock Springs, Wyoming where there isn’t a built-in industry lane.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the music, it’s the consistency behind it. Staying committed to my growth, maintaining sobriety, and continuing to build while balancing real-life responsibilities as a father, husband, and friend means everything to me. Those roles keep me grounded and influence the direction of my creativity every day.
What sets me apart is that my music isn’t constructed, it’s lived. I’m not trying to fit into a specific sound or image. I’m building something real and long-term under YT, and everything I release is part of a bigger vision of creating an authentic, independent identity that reflects where I come from and everything I’ve overcome.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a role in my life, but I don’t see it as the full explanation for where I am today.
There were moments where I was genuinely fortunate to survive situations that could have easily gone another way , active addiction, overdoses, dangerous circumstances, car accidents, and other high-risk environments. I also ran away from home as a child and found myself traveling across the country at a young age, which exposed me to a lot of instability and survival based living early on.
In that sense, I do recognize what some people might call “luck.” But more than that, I believe I’ve been blessed and protected by my Lord Jesus Christ throughout my life.
I also can’t overlook the role my family has played in shaping who I am. My mom, grandmother, father, wife and sisters all pushed me toward something better, even when it came in the form of tough love. At the time, it wasn’t always easy to understand, but looking back, that foundation of care and accountability played a major role in my growth.
What ultimately carried me forward was perseverance and responsibility. At some point, I had to take ownership of my path and commit to change. Recovery, discipline, and finding music as an outlet became the foundation for rebuilding my life from the ground up.
So while I’m grateful to still be here and recognize the moments where things could have gone differently, I don’t credit my life today to luck alone. I credit it to faith, perseverance, accountability, and the people and experiences that pushed me to become who I am today.
