Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Nichols-smith
Hi Brooklyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I majored in Criminal Justice in college- but took a photography class for an elective. I have always enjoyed being creative and this class was another avenue to enjoyed that part of my life. When Covid hit, I decided not to continue to law school and start dabbling in photography. I am so glad and grateful I did. I bought a camera and started shooting my coworkers and friends. Slowly, learned from trail and error and will continue to learn everyday!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it has not been a smooth road. Learning technology from cameras and editing software, can be difficult but luckily I have a tech-savvy husband to learn from. I think the biggest struggle in this business is comparing yourself to other photographers. Everyone has their own personal style and it’s beautiful. It is so easy to get lost in comparing your photos, likes, comments, etc, to those around you. You will never be like another so it’s important to stay grounded and focus on growing your own craft/ skills.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer and I specialize in portraits. I honestly am not known for any certain style but I love shooting concepts, I love creating a story when I shoot and use pop culture, music lyrics, movies, and more to create a photoshoot. Inspiration is all around and it’s so satisfying to use. I am proud of my ability to create something that makes my audience feel while viewing my work.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck in photography comes when you get a “lucky” shot. A car passes by at the perfect time to create a frame, the natural light hits your clients face in the softest way, and so many more. These incidents create magical photos that need some luck involved.
