Today we’d like to introduce you to Dazee Mae.
Hi Dazee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up we lived with my great grandmother for a period of time. She had a large collection of magazines and I would flip through them for hours at a time, checking each and every beauty article. It’s really full circle that my story is being published in a magazine now. But this is how my love for makeup started. I would get questions and comments about my makeup. I eventually had friends and family asking me to do theirs. Then came requests for tutorials and to post videos so they could learn for themself. I started a YouTube and it quickly became one of my biggest passions. I loved sharing beauty advice with the world, I had practically studied it. I also enjoyed the filming and editing aspect of YouTube. Friends and family would pay me to do their makeup for events and I had never felt more joy than when I would see the happiness on their face after. I started charging and moved on to do weddings and larger events. Eventually though, there came a time where I began to be consumed by alcohol. Before I knew it, my life was consumed by my addiction. This was never a part of my plan. Any and all passion or zest I had for life was put on hold. I found sobriety in April of 2021 and my life has been nothing short of a miracle since. I eventually found my way over to TikTok, though I do still post on YouTube. I started to share my love for makeup AND my journey of recovery. My following started to grow and my community too. Now, I work on the backend of TikTok with large brands creating advertisements for them. I am the writer, director, makeup artist, and editor. I do it all. I had no idea my life would turn into what it is now, creating beauty and magic. That’s what it really feels like my job is. I couldn’t be more thankful for where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course I have doubted myself at times. My childhood was rough, messy, and chaotic. There was a belief I carried with me that I was not worthy of living an “easy” life. When I found sobriety I also found immense gratitude for the human experience. I do owe my perspective on my sobriety. I now know that I am worthy of every good thing that happens to me, and it is my belief that is why they do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in bridal and photography makeup. I’m able to handle the chaos of a wedding day and pivot to make changes as needed to pull off whatever time crunch or malfunction happens. Makeup that is being photographed takes a different level of mastery, as you need to be familiar with lightning changes, formulation of products, etc., to ensure the best outcome. The other side of my business being in the advertising world it’s my job to get really familiar with every product or service that I work with. I am the most proud of how diverse my portfolio is and how adaptable I am. I have worked with brands like Crocs, Bissel, Estée Lauder, UNO, Applebees, Canva, The Joint Chiropractic, The European Wax Center, Pampers, and many more.
My adaptability and my attitude sets me apart from others. I am resilient and I believe in miracles. Gratitude is the only thing that will lead you to happiness.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Never be unteachable. Always be humble enough to know there is something to learn from everyone you encounter. Sometimes the lessons we learn from others aren’t because they are teaching us, but because they are showing us. If you pay attention you will continue to learn and grow. Be open, be respectful, and remain true to yourself in every room you enter.
